we'd been wondering ever since the papers blabbed about yoda having a lightsabre, how in space he would battle *anybody*, since he's like what? three feet tall? needless to say, we went right back to the cinema a week later to watch it again for the yoda bit.
on the whole, how do you feel about the prequels? (minus yoda)

Darth Zaphod Posted Apr 8, 2003
A tad disappointed...especially in Episode 1---too commericalized...formulated especially for young audiences, and Anakin couldn't act. The trilogy is still SOOOO much better...but hey, it's star wars, and star wars will ALWAYS kick major butt!

you kinow, my fellow star warsians and i have been discussing the whole star wars thing, and we decided that the reason that the original trilogy *worked* so well was because george lucas didn't have all that technology to play around with back then, and so had to rely greatly on acting talent and imagination. the old movies were so very grim, gritty, space-wester-y, weren't they? one could almost believe, despite the x-wings and tractor beams that it actually happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... the prequels, on the other hand, feel like something that will happen a long time from now in a galaxy far, far away. (yeah, i know the wars ravaged the galaxy, but still -)
(of course, i must confess that i'm still rather sore about the jango fett-boba fett thing...)

Yeah...understandable.
But still...the yoda/dooku fight TOTALLY made up for anthing wrong in epis. 2! And was it just me, or did Padme's shirt rip a little too conveniently when she was attacked by that creature thingy? yeah..can you say MIDRIFF??

interesting how the mother is allowed to dress so provocatively and the daughter isn't! (you remember those stories about carrie fisher and her white rubber dress?)

Farlander Posted Apr 8, 2003
yeah... george lucas seems to have mellowed out, doesn't he? guess he got used to his daughters dressing like britney -
are you into the expanded universe, by the way, or do you focus primarily on the movies?

Darth Zaphod Posted Apr 8, 2003
I mainly focus on the movies...I don't go too much more indepth than that--too much for my brain to handle

too late for you to get started anyway - there are like, what, sixty books on the expanded universe? (not counting the kids' books) i have the lot, and look where it got me.

The only part of the expanded universe I really like is the Tales of the Jedi comics. They are set 5000 years before the Trilogy. Gives some nice insight to the universe.
It's kind of hard to find a lot of the comics now, but I was really surprised to find that so many libraries in the U.S. have the Trade Paerback versions that can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

i have this nice little collection of x-wing comics... i must confess that i have the words 'x-wing pilot wannabe' stamped on my forehead the x-wing books are pretty good as well. 'starfighters of adumar' is a must-read, although my fellow expanded-universe star warsians and i almost laughed ourselves to death (a fatal disease in some parts of the galaxy). i could never get my hands on the 'tales of the jedi' comics, though

How does one go about getting "x-wing pilot wannabe" stamped on one's forehead? A tatoo I could imagine, but I would think that the stamping process might do more than a little damage to your skull.
Really though, if you have a library card, go to your local library and ask about interlibrary loan (ILL) privileges. Usually the library will want title, author, and ISBN number of a book you want to request through ILL. The hard part is getting the ISBN, but darkhorse comics website is nice enough to provide a list of EVERY Star Wars comic & Trade Paperback they have released with Author and ISBN information. This is a great way of getting comics when you can't afford them and don't have a friend reading them.

Darth Zaphod Posted Apr 10, 2003
Yea--see, I am a librarian so I know all about ILL. I even used it for my paper on Nazism not too long ago...
Don't forget tho, it does cost money--depending on how large the item is and how far away you got it from...but it's a pretty handy idea none the less.

one learns something new each day
i don't have an x-wing tattooed on my forehead, although i *do* go practically everywhere wearing an x-wing pin and hologram watch...

Farlander Posted Apr 14, 2003
i'm not sure if you can still get them *anywhere* - i got these at a star wars exhibition back in what, 1996? 1997? when the trilogy was re-released... (got a limited edition 12" wedge antilles there as well. wonder what it's worth now)

One of my prize Star Wars posessions is a Star Wars T-shirt I got in 1994 that is signed by Tom Veitch (he wrote the Dark Empire comics).
Most of my action figures (from the early 80s line of toys ) went up in flames after being attached to bottle rockets in a failed attempted to launch them into orbit (which my 10 year old brain concluded was where Star Wars belonged... in space).

oh man... i hope that a certain 3" vinyl jawa was not a passenger of your doomed rockets...
