Top of My Head. Day One.
Wasn’t prepared for this. Half and hour ago didn’t know H2G2 existed. So, here’s a little speed writing:
California. Oakland(that’s across the bay from San Francisco). Became a postal worker 29 years ago, too shy to wangle a real job out of my B.A. in English from Berkeley. Retire-able in less than three years but with too small a pension, in despair facing 15 more years of postal boredom yet procrastinating over starting, or just don’t know how to start, a new career then at 55. Do, considering my opinion of myself lately, a surprising number of things moderately if not really well. Couple of finished novels, that no reader quite realized were humor, on my hard drive, more than a couple of others started but abandoned or on hold. Poems also, but too few, the latest flurry a response to William Empson’s assertion in Seven Kinds of... that one can’t consciously construct artistically viable ambiguities. (Maybe I did construct some.) Over thirty Sierra Nevada peaks scaled, always solo, but no really hard ones, class 3 at the worst. Spanish from high school, French from college, Italian self-taught. Try to read something in each every now and then. Just finished Don Quixote and Espantapáros, reread the Paradiso, keep up with the Cahiers du Cinema. Currently in Mario Benedetti’s Buzón de Tiempo. Devotee of the Pacific Film Archive and the San Francisco International Film Festival, see maybe 300 films per year, but miss a lot working nights. Own a lot of anime. Know Japanese cinema perhaps better than I know other countries’. (Did Japanese too in college, this mostly gone now though.) Make sour dough bread every week, but never measure anything, not pro grade, never the same twice, break rules, eat straight from oven, love huge irregular airholes(record 4" by 3" by 1" in a fougasse; have photo; but couldn’t figure out how to duplicate baking feat that guides call error). Run(high-“sevens” per mile). Racewalk(quarter mile five years ago walked in one minute 52 seconds; way slower now). Chess and go against the computer. Now and then take a photo worth a cheap frame. At least once did a doodle that merited the same honor.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
