Christ up a stick I'm depressed.
Researcher U197087 Started conversation Apr 22, 2008
I work for someone 4 weeks from retirement who doesn't care what happens after that, training a temp who's only here for 3 months max, for a department overseen by someone who doesn't care what I get paid, in fact forgot to organise my being paid AT ALL when I was first properly put on the payroll, and someone else who won't care until he returns from half a year's holiday in NZ next month.
Why the should I? I'm the one with clinical depression.

Because you need to work for a living, so you might as well make the best of it till something better comes along? Because there's no point in sinking to everyone else's level when maintaining a decent work ethic and as positive an attitude as you can will reflect well on you in whatever you do? Because if it's that bad there, there's definitely something better for you out there- it's just a matter of finding it?
Because you do care what happens while you're there, because you're a responsible, conscientious person who seems to find other people's lack of concern and consideration too annoying and unacceptable to be sucked into it himself?
Because you're better than all that?
Or maybe because I'm full of it and I'm blowing sunshine up your ass?
You know which bits *I* think are true.

Well, an all-over tan might cheer you up.
Hang in there. I've been stuck in some really awful places- including that last barsteward who didn't pay me at ALL. It really can suck all of the joy right out of you. Sooner or later, if you can keep caring, someone, somewhere will appreciate that caring and will compensate you appropriately.

Maybe you should punch someone. That might help.

Not sure how to take that! I couldn't punch my way out of a wet paper bag.

Well I nearly slapped a social worker this morning, purely in a voluntary capacity.

Yowsah. Letting the side down, then?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'the side'. My dealings with social workers are strictly either in a social capacity (at home), or in a semi-professional capacity in which they have to justify their existence to me.
I hasten to add that it wasn't the one at home that I slapped. It was one who couldn't believe that I was questioning her decision - despite my giving her repeated opportunities to try and convince me she was right.
The amusing thing was...she was trying to do what a certain well-known Christian on this site recently accused *me* of doing...and she was wearing an ostentatious cross. (You know that peculiar Christian fashion-statement of a cross worn outside a high-necked pullover?)

Okay, part of the Higher Social Services. The one without a regulatory body.

Thanks Ellen. It comes and goes (not with quite bipolar consequences) but I generally resolve to leave work at work and be grateful for what I've got. It might push some buttons, but I can always go.

Leaving work at work is always a good idea, even in the best of jobs.
I went to a bead show this weekend, and my sis bought me a cool ring made of pearls.

Well, if you can't punch your way out of a wet paper bag maybe you should stab someone...
Kidding. Working a thankless job is rubbish, I know about that. I don't suppose it's any consolation that the segments you wrote in the rap thread are sounding exceptionally fresh now they are being delivered by a text to speech engine.
Have you considered that now might be the perfect time for a semi-protracted sickie?

Thanks a_a_e (I'd love to hear that, by the way). Trouble is, with so few staff (just me and the new temp there tomorrow) the place would grind to a halt, and people wouldn't get their prescriptions. You'd think that would merit a bit extra duty of care to one's staff, huh?

Yeah. People need medical stuff. I forgot the hospital mail once*. You would not... you probably would believe the level of havoc and ructions and extreme redness of the face in people that caused.
*or twice
