Sword and Sorcery
Posted Nov 18, 2003
I think it was Raymond Chandler who once said that detective novels were the purest kind of literature, because in the end the bad always met their just deserts. I would like to make the same claim for Sword&Sorcery. At the beginning the good suffer terribly and decoratively, at the end the bad meet their just deserts in a way that is both awful and satisfying, usually by falling from a high place or getting eaten by the slimy monsters they themselves conjured up from the abyss, where everything dark and ugly is conveniently placed, instead of lying about randomely all over the dimension, as it does in ours.
Sword & Sorcery is about good and evil, interpunctuated by lots of sword clash, drenched in gore and gold, and overshadowed by larger than life heroes setting the place by the ears in a way that never fails to leave me with my spirits strangely uplifted.

EAST AND WEST
In the West you find fashions.
In the East you find passion.
The West has fancies.
The East has dreams.
In the East they laugh for no good reason.
But in the West the laugh is on you.
EASTERNERS, WESTERNERS
Westerners judge.
Easterners observe.
Westerners compete.
Easterners lack the edge.
Their skin is too thin.
Sometimes they drink too much.
THE RUSSIAN PRINCE
One way or another an Easterner always looks out of place in the US of America. The US of America looked out of place around Sasha.
He was born on Sakhalin peninsula. There was a quiet about him, a sense of eternity. He had those dreaming eyes that look beyond the horizon, and deep inside everything. His melancholy was as gigantic as his laughter.
"I'm lucky, I adapt very fast." He said. "I am glad I had the courage to take that step. I dance everywhere in the country, everywhere in the world. It’s great, I feel wonderful."
He seemed invincible, invulnerable, he was uncontrollable, and knew he would never see his country, family and love again.
When I think of Sasha I think of great strength. He was the man who made the difference, every time.
THE WORLD TO DANCE IN
Dancing lion. Lion dancer.
Whirling round and round the world,
in the blast of trumpets and fanfares,
big and brash and powerful,
abandoned blond mane flying.
Charismatic, spectacular, flamboyant.
Whimsical, guileless, ironic.
Moody, brooding, haunted.
Lunatic, perfectionist, obsessive.
Lonely?
Afraid?
He drank too much.
A flame burning high and bright, briefly.
Left are ashes in the sea.
The Pacific ocean separates
California and Sakhalin.

Cry, cry, cry

Good bye Johnny, good bye Johnny!
He was the Man in Black.
Now he rode into the sunset,
of some eternal sunrise,
his voice stays grumbling back.
