Its ages since I last visited h2g2 - I've been to busy with summer, and visitors and summers holidays and ice cream and world cups and things. Now its sept, I'll hopefully manage to spend some more time here.

have just read the guide entry on derivatives - boy is it bad! very poor partial description, no histroy, no indication of how to price them (the replicating portfolio isn't a difficult idea), and no understanding of their role and value

free trade & fair trade

I think I am going to try and write an entry on "free trade" setting out the history of the idea of trade, the arguments in favour of free trade, and objections to free trade, some stuff about GATT & WTO, and the most recent fair trade ideas. A rough outline follows:
1. Ancient ideas about trade
2. Early modern ideas about trade, and arguments for free trade before Adam Smith.
3. Adam Smith and absolute advantage
4. Comparative advantage
5. Objecions to free trade
6. The Corn Laws
7. Protectionism and The Great Depression
8. GATT - WTO; international trade since WW2
9. Fair trade and present day objections to free trade.
All suggestions and comments are welcome.

some initial thoughts

having had a look around there appear to be gaps in the guide in some areas of interest to me viz: finance, economics, and orkney. So here is a random list of potential guide entries:
options & derivatives
free trade & fair trade
actuaries, and actuarial science
loads of stuff about orkney: people, places, pubs, farming, peat cutting, home brew, birsay, the saga, the vikings, skatehorn...
