btw...you could also use sunflower oil or other in the Dirty Rice - but I feel that olive oil gives a good flavour in that case.

I usually make spicy rice for having with refried beans by first preparing the rice (I use brown rice rather than white, though), then sauteeing in olive oil, garlic, chopped onion, diced tomato, and a single chili pepper, sliced thin but not *too* small (we like spice but not unbearably hot).

The kohlrabi does look a bit like sputnik, and we haven't used it yet.

Usually I make kale into a caldo verde type thing with veggie chorizo. This time I sauteed it in olive oil and garlic with zucchini, then added diced tomato and fresh dill, and had it with farro.

I vaguely remember being given kohlrabi as a kid. My memory is of a fairly dull but unpleasant mushy horribleness. I'd not be keen to retry the experiment myself so in answer to your OP question I'd say 'give it away' smiley - smiley

It's more 'brocolli stalks' than 'radishes'.

I like broccoli stalks, cooked (but not raw).

Not keen on dull mushy horribleness, either, myself.

Well, it'll get eaten over the weekend, one way or another.

Kohlrabi to me is a halfway point between cabbage and turnip. Both best enjoyed raw. So I skin them, slice them, and into a bit of water and the fridge. Once well chilled, a light sprinkle of salt perhaps and they make a very refreshing evening snack on a hot night.

I don't mind them cooked, especially in soup. smiley - winkeye

Nice comic, though.

So what do I do with dill stems? We have a bouquet dill and I don't know what to do with the big stemmy parts. Other than put them in my parings back and use them for veggie stock- which might in fact be lovely.

Leftover bits of dill come in handy for flinging at people you don't much like. At least, that's what my older relatives used to do...

So I could cut it into fling-sized pieces and carry it on the train to work on Monday. smiley - biggrin

Dill has no proper place in the human consumption idea. So if you can find a means to ball it up with anything else, make into really good and discrete flingy bits ... smiley - evilgrin

Gosh, what a bunch of dill haters I associate with! smiley - winkeye

I've no shortage of things to do with the actual leaves- we love them- but there's just so much stem and I hate to throw it away. Or fling *all* of it at annoying people.

Well okay, I have always had some time for Phyllis Diller, but that's as close as I get. It's a weed, like catnip and chickory and other road-side stuff. Just not something that appeals to me in any incarnation. smiley - shrug

Now chicory I *don't* like. smiley - yuk Never actually had catnip, other than for the cats.

chicory can be ok - I went through a stage of drinking chicory coffee. Initially the taste was a bit like celery but it grows on you smiley - smiley

Haven't had any in ages though.

I like celery all right, but chicory... . And especially that chicory coffee. Some friends of ours love it, and one time bought us a canister. smiley - weird

Dill.

I use it in a sort of one-pot Indian pilaf thing, with rice, dice potatoes, mushrooms, channa dhal and a fair amount of ginger. It can yake a lot of dill - the massive bunches you buy in Asian store sre ideal.

Stems, too? It's the stems that are giving me all the trouble. They don't seem to taste as "dilly" as the leaves.

Today I'm making a pot of pea soup. Half a Vidalia onion, a leek, and a carrot, finely chopped. 2 cups dried split peas, 1 cup fresh peas, a bay leaf, and 4 cups veggie stock. Simmer. Add a few Tbsp fresh dill. Puree. Serve with more fresh dill on top. We've got pumpernickel bread to have with it, and K has both havarti and some five-year gouda with nettles in it. (I really miss good gouda and havarti sometimes...)
