Secretly Not Here Any More

I'll let B'el answer. She's the expert.

OK- and thanks again, all of you. What a team!

I'll concede to concensus in regards to the hyphenation thing, and in regards to Anglicizing proper USAnian names. No problem. I also appreciate knowing that the collective noun thing has been a point of contention in the past; it feels better somehow to know that it's not "just me", if you know what I mean?

Most of all, I appreciate Psycorp and Skanky offering to get corrections made for me. I'll definitely get started on my entry about Feline Cerebellar Hypoplasia. In fact, when I've finished it, I'll post a link here for review and comment to see if you lot think it's worthy of PR and the EG. smiley - ok

Thanks again. It feels good to maybe contribute again.

I'll go through it with a fine tooth-comb, then go through the changes you've suggested yourself. When I've done that, I'll let you know and you can point out anything I've missed smiley - ok

First, though, I have the remnants of a party to clean up or I'm a dead man when she gets back.

Good luck cleaning up after that party. Being an aggressively tidy person myself, I know all about that Exterminating Angel type homecoming.

All done, pretty much. The Curators thread is at F3198237?thread=4760785 - might be worth subscribing to.

'I'm not sure if this is a UKnian thing, but do you always hyphenate between the measurement and the unit of measurement? As in "440 seat" or "150 foot"? We don't do that here, but I didn't assume.'

You should do. This may not make any sense, but here goes...

You are describing a cinema which has 440 seats, but you don't want to say 'the cinema has 440 seats' because it's not very snappy. So you want to use an adjective instead to describe the cinema. Unfortunately, there isn't an adjective that means '440 seats' so you have to make one yourself. You're creating a 'compound adjective'. So you have to use a hyphen to join the two words, otherwise you're using two adjectives, not just one compound adjective. It doesn't make sense to say '440 seat cinema'; you're using two adjectives, one of which is '440' and the other is 'seat', and there's no such thing as a '440 cinema' or a 'seat cinema'. Hence the hyphen.

A commonly quoted example of this is:

American-football player - someone who plays American football
American football player - a football player who is American

Lots more about hyphens here if you're interested:

http://www.reference.com/search?q=hyphens

(Did you want me to give you a measurement in meters for each which can be inserted parenthetically? I'll do so). - No, thanks. We'll cope without smiley - smiley

'Would proper names still be Anglicized? I hadn't considered it an error, just something I wonder about. For instance, the sub-ed refers to "Calumet Harbor" as such, but not "IMAX Theater" or "Home Defense". I was curious as to the inconsistency.' You're absolutely correct; they are all proper nouns and should not be Anglicised.

Have a reread and let me know if I've missed anything. I often do smiley - smiley

I can't work out whether this is irony or whether you mean a fine-tooth comb. Teeth are not normally hairy.

Thank you, Rich! Beautiful! I'll concede to you on the distance measurement hyphens; it's not something I've ever heard of doing but I trust you (and will make a note for future entries that it's something I should introduce prior to submission).

Otherwise, just one wee instance of "navy" not being capitalized remains: second paragraph, second sentence, I think... "The Pier was used as a training facility by the US navy and not accessible to the public during World War II."

I can't thank you enough- especially for taking care of that so darn quickly after I'd been trying for over three years.

Things were busier at the office yesterday than expected so I haven't started on anything new yet. But I'll get to work either Friday morning or Saturday morning. I can't commit to frequency, but I will contribute in any way I can. I might even show my face in PR, if I can find my protective gear. smiley - winkeye

PS- I am pretty sure I get what you're saying about the hyphens and it did make sense to me, so I should know *how* to use them going forward. It's just truly not something I've ever seen. Just this morning I was reading about country music stars; by this rule, it would be written "country-music star"?

You're wonderful! You're all wonderful!

Edward, teeth sometimes *feel* hairy in the morning, if you've forgotten to brush your teeth the night before. Maybe a tooth-comb is used to prime the teeth for the toothbrush?

Done that one now smiley - smiley

'Country music star' is a star who plays music and comes from the country. A 'country-music star' is a star who plays country music.

Getting these changes done is now very quick through Editorial Feedback, which is now largely run by the Curators and has been for over a year. If you spot anything or are miffed about the treatment of your Entry with the subs, it's a very efficient way of getting things ironed out.

I'll let you guys have fun with the tooth-comb idea smiley - winkeye

Thanks again, Rich. All this info has been duly noted for future reference.

Now that's taken care of, this conversation- like all others in my journal tend to do- can officially drift into frivolity, fluff, licentiousness and debauchery. smiley - ok

Wisely, he doesn't mention the dubious "S"

Monsieur Bauch was introduced into the world of of non-innocent ideas
quite some time back & is now supplying spectacles, with his good fiend; Herr Lomb. Maxim "size, actually *Is everything*

It is wise to closely examine such ideas. Imagine Innocent Girl Guides scaling fences made of such items; whilst climbing every mountain, fording every tree. The mind woggles.

Can I ask yet another technical question? It's in regards to the new "subscribing/blocking" feature. *How* do you block a user? I can't find any link to do that anywhere. Will it appear on the "create entry" page for new entries, or would I find it somewhere else? Just wondering.

Hoping to get some free time between projects this weekend to start writing. Someone called off sick yesterday and today so I've been busier than I'd anticipated.

Which skin are you in, pc? It only worksd in brunel.

Have a look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/MSU194479

scratch that, I just did and the feature seems to be gone. Maybe they did hide it now?

Sorry, didn't see the forest because of all the treés.
It says : Action: remove and block for users who are subscribed. I can't see the feature to block all subscribers, though, and I'm sure it was there before. smiley - erm

I switched from Goo to Brunel with the intent of using the new feature. (I otherwise prefer Goo, because the color scheme of Alabaster displeases meh, and because I like to navigate the site using frames) I guess I could leave a question there asking how the "block" works- but I'm nowhere near as outgoing online as I am in RL, so I get all bashful about starting new posts. smiley - blush

Since no one has subscribed to me yet, that might be why I didn't see a "block" option. Not having any new entries for anyone to subscribe to might have something to do with that... smiley - puff

If only there was a way to block people from commenting on your journal entries (though it appears my long-time stalker has elvised, phew!)... present company excepted, of course!
