Hello - nice of you to get in touch. I really don't know what I'm doing here so don't know yet if I have any questions. I'll get in touch if I think of anything.
Just thought actually - is there a h2g2 Vegan Society too? I'm only a relatively recent convert to veganism (2am 8th Jan) but I've been vegetarian for about 18 years. Feels good though so I think it's a life-long decision. The Vegantoo bit came about because I have a (recently found) friend who has the e-mail address therugbyvegan (making it sound like she is the only one in the area!) and my response to her was - I'm vegan too. So now I am Vegantoo.
Another question - is there some way to spell check what you write in these message boxes?
Just off to see if there are any entries on veganism on the site.
See you
x

Guess I must do (get the vitamins etc.) cos I've been feeling great since my conversion. Full of beans as it were. I do take a B12 supplement as it isn't available from non-animal sources (which kind of makes you worry about what they make it out of!) and your central nervous system packs up without it.
Are you interested in a maybe could do it sort of way?
Thanks for the links.

actually, b12 is available from non-animal sources. It can be found in the dirt on vegetables that aren't thoroughly washed, and many tofus and soy-based foods are supplemented with it now.
Same for calcium.

But why not just eat the animal? *hopes no one will get mad smiley - winkeye*

or why not at least drink milk? I eat mostly organic foods, but i don't really want to convert, I'm happy as is... i just want to hear another point of view...smiley - ok

Soya based products don't seem to agree with me unfortunately. And as for the dirt - I think I'd rather make sure my veggies are clean and take the supplements thank you!

I haven't wanted to eat animals for a long time. The total vegan thing came as a bit of a surprise to me too (not entirely sure why I had to do it - but it feels right and I'm not hurting anyone by doing what I want to - so why not?) I don't condemn anyone for eating what they want (well, I might draw the line at human flesh) and I'm not out to convert anyone - just interested to get in touch with like-minded people to share thoughts and ideas.

I have a reply to the "why not drink milk" - I already wrote it to someone else. It's here and if they take out that link, just go to my space and read the "welcome" thread.
I think you'll understand a little more.

Thanks. I read it the other day actually - all good stuff. I did feel like replying then that the dairy industry in the UK isn't as bleak as it sounds in the States. There is a move towards a higher level of organic farming and the conditions seem a lot better than the picture you describe. (I know, I live opposite a dairy farm.) But then I thought again about my reply and it sounded as though I was in favour of the industry - which I'm not - calves are still taken away from their mothers and the milk goes to feed humans while they get an inferior substitute. My other worry about dairy is that we aren't designed to digest it beyond infancy - and even in infancy we are meant to have our mother's milk. It all seems a bit weird and contrived to me - to take the milk of another species. My kids are all vegetarian and (unfortunately) consume rather too much dairy. They have all had problems with allergy/eczema/asthma and we have tried to limit it (in varying degrees over the years) but the trouble is - they like it! I am not someone who will push my views on anyone - my children have the right to decide for themselves - as long as they make an informed choice. So I explain things to them and they decide. Luckily they decide to be vegetarian - I couldn't cook them meat if they asked - but they don't want it anyway. I've told them about eggs and dairy - but they seem to be able to cope with that on their conscience.
It's good to see vegan stuff being discussed like this. Let's talk more!

WEll, EA, I agree wholeheartedly with you on your reasons for not eating dairy and such... about not needing it, hey, we don't really need candy and such, and we eat it anyway because it tastes good... and about the chickens being treated unfairly, i agree with that too... it's a very unfair process, but there is another option... free-range chickens... chickens that are kept in a wide open space, never pumped with antbiotics or thrown in grinders... and killed peacefully... but... now that i think about it, they're still killed, and i suppose that that is a little inhumane... but, we are still humans, and it is our nature to feed off of other species.... we are a sick race... in the words of agent smith from the matrix, "human beings are not really mammals"... sorry to ramble... *phew*
