Cal - interim high priest of the Church of the Holy Tail Started conversation Apr 30, 2005
Thursday was a big day for Doncaster
Why?
It was the day that the first commercial flight took off from our brand spanking new airport
149 passengers boarded Flight Tom521 from the lovely Donny rain to the lovely sunshine of Palma at 9.15 Thursday morning.
The airport has created 600 new jobs for local people
It was a former RAF Base and has the largest runway in europe (see I do know something) I'll have to sit down now.
It is set in a little village called Finningley so what do you think the airport is called?
It used to be called RAF Finningley
So Finningley airport?
No
Doncaster airport?
No
South Yorkshire Airport?
No
It is infact called Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! what a ing mouth full and in case you were wondering Robing Hood is from Nothinghamshire not South Yorkshire so I have no idea how he managed to get his name in the title </>
Anyhoo if you'd like to have a go at thinking up a silly name for our airport please feel free, I'm sure you can do as well if not better than Doncaster Council

Actually I wondered why it was called Robin Hood, and wasn't the Earl of Doncaster famous for being in Blackadder

yes
and we have a hotel very posh </> Called the Earl of Doncaster
And Doncaster is also famous for the Grand St Leger Horse Race (we also have an hotel named after that ) so maybe one of those in the title would of made more sense
what am I saying, this is the council we're talking about, of course sense never came into it God forbid!

You obviously haven't heard of New Labour. It would be called the Tony Blair, George Bush, Margaret Thatcher (and Michael Howard if he wasn't currently leading the Conservitives) Municipal Public Toilet Airport.

Or the Kelly Holmes-Steve Redgrave-Seb Coe-Matthew Pinsentt-Johnny Wilkinson-Ben Ainsley-Shirley Robertson Airport, remembering how desperatly they want the 2012 games to be in London

The He-Man and The Master of the Universe Municipal Public Water Closet Airport would have been good.

or they could have not built it in the first place!
there has been quite alot of planes going in during the day over the last year or so and its soooooo annoying when you live close enough for them to circle over your house.
the houses in the flight path have gone down in value apart from ones very close which have all been sound proofed.

it's created a lot of jobs in Doncaster, which as you know is what donny needs, we aren't all lucky enough to go to university and train as teachers, and is estimated to create 7,000 more as new businesses are attracted to Doncaster because of the airport.

bearing in mind alot of the jobs created require trained people.
my parents never went to uiniversity yet there isnt really any thing they can do at the airport.
yes it wil create jobs for people who have had the training and got the qualifications required to carry out thejobs.
in the long run it will do more bad for donny than good.

Theres been plenty jobs advertised that don't require training, so theres where your wrong.
And
They even have offered to give training for certain jobs, plus you can start in a lower posistion in the "company" and work your way up through training that the airport gives to its employees

Lets just agree to disagree on this cal.
there has been a massive debate over the airport since it was suggested. most people in doncaster are on one side or another.
im against it and always have been.
the majority of people in bessacarr are. we did have a petition against it and alot of people signed it including myself.
where my parents live is in the flight path and it does create noise for us to the point where the house seems to shake. the house prices near us are starting to go down in price because of this.
it may create a few jobs but to what expense?
you may be for the airport but im not
we could argue about it all day but id rather not.
its been built and whether i agree with it or not its there and now we have to suffer.
