Hi GB
friendlywithteeth Posted Jul 2, 2002
i also like reading: have just finished Small Gods ["logic is just ignorance by numbers"], and am now looking set to conquer Gormenghast...it may take me a while!
Hi GB
Noggin the Nog Posted Jul 4, 2002
I'm a major league Pratchett fan myself; and Douglas Adams; they're probably the two authors everyone round here has read and refers to; I also like Umberto Eco and J.R.R. Tolkien and Sheri S. Tepper and.... well, loads of others.
Regards
Sage

you must like it a lot: three times!
I'm into an eclectic mix, including our terry, our douglas, as well as Jon COurtenay Grimwood, Tolkein, Orson Scott Card, Paulo Coelho, oh and I've got a Gabriel Marquez I want to read...

Gormenghast is good; I read it mumblety years ago, give or take a decade, before it was even on the TV; it may even have been before there was TV. We had quality TV in those days of course, Andy Pandy, Bill and Ben, Captain Pugwash, Crossroads... well, scrub that one, it was ahead of its time... Still, you can imagine the effect of hearing the Dr Who theme music for the first time (arguably the most influential piece of music in the last forty years). We had proper music in the sixties, of course, blah blah blah drone drone....

I'm enjoying it, but finding it quite hard going: because I don't have as much time as I wanted too. We had quality tv when I was little [well littler!]: Stoppit and Tidyup, Thomas the T.E., Transformers! The best theme tune was Easternders, or MASH! [Am currently watching the re-runs!]
We didn't have proper music in the eighties, with the exception of some good rock, the whole decade was a bit of a no-show!
FwT: can reminisce as much as you can!

Touche.
Thomas the Tank Engine is cool, but you can't be serious in comparing the theme from Eastenders with Dr Who, can you? I mean, I know it's a bit dated now, but when it first appeared there ws no such thing as electronic music; the Beatles were still in Hamburg, Pink Floyd were still at school, and Cliff Richard was still second in line to Elvis Presley for the title of Prince of Darkness (which may or may not explain why he is now fabulously wealthy and hasn't aged a bit in forty years....). The only TV theme music in the same league is Badalementi's "Twin Peaks". (The programme once described as the most fun you can have without having a clue as to what's going on.)

ok ok, how about the mash themetune, or star trek! Never heard of twin peaks im afraid! Oh and what about the crystal maze theme tune!
Hi Fwt:
Noggin the Nog Posted Jul 7, 2002
Mash and Star Trek (may it live long and prosper) are both good, but they're not groundbreaking. Can't recall the crystal maze tune, I'm afraid. How about Red Dwarf and Monty Python? Do you know, I can't actually think of a good current TV theme offhand?

I'm back!
Had a really good time..., so what did you think of your quotes, are they properly represented!

Hi Fwt:
Noggin the Nog Posted Jul 10, 2002
Except for one minor point which is down to me; Umbert Eco should read Umberto Eco; a typoo I'm afraid; sorry.
Glad you enjoyed yourself; I could do with a break myself.

Will correct that forthwith! I know this is silly, but you weren't on the news recently were you? I saw this report about the euro, where this welsh village was accepting it [except the post office!] but they interviewed this shop-keeper, without a welsh accent, and with whom you got the feeling that there was more to than meets the eye, and I just thought....Sage.
So there are x number of men in Wales, but was it you: not a long shot at all

'fraid not, although I did have my fifteen minutes of fame a few years ago (about six) when someone tried to blag the post office.
