I've seen you posting to several forums, about the problem with switching between accounts with the digibox. Maybe, if you could explain it in further detail, I may be able to help or not as the case may besmiley - biggrin

Hi! Sorry, I've only just found this message, must've overlooked it yesterday, what with Message Centres, Forums & Guides etc. I never know where I should be looking! smiley - smiley & perhaps thats why I ended up referring to this "cookie" thing in too many places & getting my threads tied up! smiley - sorry I WILL get the hang of this thing one day (probably on the day Telewest lock me out again smiley - smiley)
As to the problem: I think it was discussed to exhaustion in the "HAYULP" conversation orignally on the "Friends Of LD" page, but I'll be happy to oblige in a bit of technological tautology (& any new ideas) right here when I've a bit more time (my personal space declares my limitations) but I should be able to post it up in detail in the next day or two ... system permitting, of course!

Yes, that's where I first heard about your problem, things seemed to get lost in the backlog though. Did you get the issue resolved?

Well it all revolves around the "always remember me" button. When activated its supposed to automatically log you in until you choose to log out, but my digibox takes it literally & really does ALWAYS remember me! If I do click on "log out" it takes me to the required page saying I'm logged out & it won't remember me, but it still does! & while on that page, if I click on any h2g2 link it logs me straight back in. So:
1-I can't log out properly
2-I can't set up a different account
& therefore 3-no-one else can use digibox.
I've tried all possible ways of switching off & leaving it off for up to 10mins to clear memory & changing passwords. None of which worked.
I've searched all over & found only 1 other reference to this by Emmily, as it says in my thread she was told by aka to use some kind of boot up code (turning off, holding in power button while switching on until LED "Okay" message then pressing tv button 4 times) I haven't tried this cos a) it sounds dodgy & b) she says it didn't work anyway. & she was only free from the problem when her digibox packed in & was replaced. Which makes me wonder; are there different models of digibox & only certain ones are affected?

When you click on the h2g2 link there's a bit underneath your name, "click here if this is not you" (or similar), if you click on that, it takes you to the re-register page.

From there you can open a new account, but the digibox will always remember the last account used(it does this whether you click "always remember..." or not.

To go back to the other account, log out and click on the register link, you will get 2 options, register or log in, if you want a new account then register if you want to use an old account use the log in link.

I use this method to switch between accounts all the time and I clicked on the "always remember..." thingy(excuse tech termsmiley - flustered) when I first registered.

The things you are refering to with the codes, won't work because the IP address is embedded in your digibox(this is not a problem though), and the codes given were the wrong ones.

It sounds more like user error than anything else. If you've already followed these directions then forgive me, but they work for me and I can't see how they won't work for you.

I hope that helps if not, feel free to smack me with a smiley - fish

Never mind the smiley - fish, let me smack you with a but in a friendly way of course smiley - biggrin
This was the 1st thing I ever tried & it still doesn't work. You see I can get to logout screen, I can reregister & login as new user. I politely follow the "please wait" demand until it takes me to the unedited personal space of Researcher (whatever the new number may be... it sounds good so far doesn't it? But here comes the crunch: WHATEVER I click on next (whether its Preferences to replace the number with a nickname, Front Page, Help, The Guide. ANY "link"!) I find myself taken to the required page but in THIS account! Its crazy!
Oh & I do forgive your well-smacked features smiley - smiley

Hope you're feeling better after your impacting encounter, I can be deadly with a large sea-based mammal smiley - smiley that'll teach you to make violent suggestions smiley - biggrin or not whatever!
But regarding your less violent suggestion, you seem to imply that its important to be logged out before you register, but this is impossible for me (only me?) You see I log out (so far so good) I click on register, but when I'm shown the "register" page its already logged me back in! You can tell because the "My Space" link reappears. I noticed Emmily referred to this too somewhere but I'm not sure if this is normal anyway. All I know is that the ONLY place I'm permitted to be logged out is ON the logout page!!

That'll teach mesmiley - erm

It does do that sometimes. When you logout it mentions to register go to Front Page, if you press the register button, that seems to work better.

When you've noticed you're still logged in, have you tried to logout again or tried to use one of the other accounts? When I first started switching between accounts, I encountered the same problems you did, it seems once the digibox realises you're switching between accounts, it starts letting you(if _that_ makes sense). It's a stubborn beast.

The best thing to do, would be to keep trying, it will sort itself out.
I know you've tried a "few" times, and it's annoying but it still sounds like user error to me.

Hmmm, I still manage to hang myself with the last paragraph, better not offer you that fish.smiley - run

Hm what exactly do you mean by "user error"? Its not as if I'm a dastardly, moustache-twiddling baddie who ties posh virginal damsels to railway lines whilst deliberately ignoring on-screen instructions (gosh! how heinous would THAT be? smiley - smiley)
I mean, since registering this "eidetic" account I've never even seen a front page that didn't welcome me back! Oh & one thing I neglected to mention (I forgot actually smiley - sorry) is this:
When I try to log in to a new account, I type in the username & password which are accepted, it says wait until you're taken to your personal space, which I do & sure enough after a moment the new unedited personal space appears. BUT I'm not there as the new user, I'm back in the old account viewing the space as a visitor! Its easy to overlook (& therefore forget) this as the only telltale sign is the appearance of "Add To Friends" instead of "Edit Page". So although I can register new accounts, I can never really log in to them!!
Aaargh! Hand me that suicidally selfslapping salamander! smiley - biggrin

No salamanders will a smiley - dragon suffice?smiley - biggrin

I always get a welcome message from the front page too. The digibox always remembers the last account that was in use and logs you back into it.

It is a problem I've had myself but persistance overcomes resistance(well it did in my casesmiley - biggrin), all I can suggest doing is just keep logging back in to the new account and it _should_ eventually allow you to switch accounts.

Just one last question, when you are trying to log in to a new account is it the same new account you're trying to log in to?

For the past few months (since getting the latest "magic" email after old one ceased to work) I've only been trying with one new account, I thought any more would confuse the digibox (not to mention me! smiley - smiley) But since 1st coming on here many moons ago (pre 360 & plain skin ... I think!?) I've tried with 4 new accounts, all of which are decomposing & unused because I can't get into them! & when I get frustrated with my current new account & then forget the password I'll probably register a NEW new one & repeat the process. Like Groundhog Day, but without the laughs.

Oh I must confess, I was confused by your dragon which seemed a bit of a non sequitur ... until I realised I'd typed "salamander" instead of "salmon"!! So I offer my stupidly embarrassed features for the mother-of-all-slaps with whatever creature is close to hand! smiley - smiley

So how is it post SSO? Or should I be running for cover?smiley - biggrin

Oh, hello. I think the delay of my reply says more than I can through the medium of typing, if indeed you can call this "typing" as it consists mainly of deleting things I haven't typed! So perhaps I should discard the word "typing" and replace it with the phrase "ttypyp.co.uk.net.tving" smiley - smiley
As you can probably now assume I'm finding the site pretty unusable at the moment. SSO is fine, I can log in and out like a lumberjack (yes, that IS a flimsy comedic simile smiley - smiley) the problem is the glitchy software, for every 10mins online 7mins of that is taken up by deleting echoes and trying to get back to the page I WANTED to look at. At the moment I can barely keep up with a handful of emails, and thats only because there are less things for my jaunty cursor to click on. In here it acts like a kid in a sweetshop with so many unrequited places for me to be sent. So recently I seem to be limited to ever more fleeting and sparse visits when I'm in a particularly patient mood smiley - winkeye
Have you heard anything about when (IF??)) they're gonna sort it out? Or is that the silliest question in the history of mankind smiley - laugh I mean, we're not asking for the earth, are we? Just some occasional competence wouldn't go amiss. (I'd even settle for not having to listen to Eddie Murphy "singing" <shudder&gtsmiley - winkeye

Right, let's see if I can send this before being hurled into the the oblivion that is called PlayJam!

I should've gone for cover.smiley - biggrin

There's not much I can do for the software bugs, they really annoy me me too, I could help with the getting back to the page you wanted thing though. We've worked out how to enable the back button on here. As for when the software will be fixed, well, your guess is as good as mine. It was released nationwide even though the bugs were well known for older boxes, complain and they'll probably try and replace your box instead.

I'm not fond of the new email layout either, I prefered the dropdown "shortcuts", and they've taken the opportunity to cut it down again!smiley - erm

I think I' I'm off to $ky, at least they're better at treating you like an asshole.smiley - biggrin
