But surely if I've given them my welcome, and all the links and stuff, an ACE doesn't need to do it too? I accept your point about the coming to me with a problem, but if I just change my greeting so it doesn't say 'I'm an ACE', just 'I'm here to help you find your way around' or something like that...?

Being an ACE is about more than just giving a link to the smileys homepage, they need a welcome from an ACE so that they know what an ACE is and who to go to for help...
As I say there's nothing to stop you from greeting the new researchers, but really a better use of your time whilst waiting for your ACE badge and invitation to the ACEforum is to practice being an 'upstanding member of the community', i.e. calming down heated threads, keeping an eye for those breaking the house rules and people that are abusing the site in some way or another etc...
