Saturnine Started conversation Feb 22, 2003
Right folks. I'm online until 3pm...
Just to inform you of Saturnine-style goings on.
March 31st is my official deadline for getting online with a PC. (njan, you must call me again sometime tonight, I shall text you my home number ASAP). We are officially deserting Telewest (because it is an awful company and should be exiled to Iraq) and switching over to some kind of TV digital service and a new phone service. Therefore my digibox access to h2g2 shall be cut off. And also my email. Depending on his njan-liness...I *therefore* have to set up regular stable net access by the end of next month...
Hmm. That doesn't make much sense.
I think you know what I am getting at. Hopefully won't be too complicated in the execution. I'm sure the two folks I am in regular contact with, will help me through it...
Why oh why must I put myself through this.
Missed you all as well. The days are long and empty without the halls of h2g2. And I noticed the folks were nice enough to put my second article on the Front Page on the day I make it to the library! Hooray!!

ok.. well.. I'm probably only going to be around for another week or so, and whilst I have a computer for you (or .. have the bits and can put them back together), I have no way of getting it to you; does anyone who subscribes to saturnine's journal particularly want to drive a computer from oxford to bristol?

I have an idea! Borrow a double-stroller from someone with two kids, or a dolly that you could tie the boxes to, and take the train . Couldn't you? We certainly had more crap than a computer's worth of stuff a few weeks ago

Please, please, pluuueeezzzeee try? I would be your friend for ever and a supplier of smoked salmon if you ever came to Vancouver.

Wampus Posted Feb 22, 2003
If not for my car and myself being on the wrong continent, I would volunteer to help transport the computer.

I'd try and get them on the train if not for the fact that I can't afford a train ticket. .. the case's a full tower case, and the monitor's a 17" graphics design monitor, so it'd be hard to do on the train anyway, but still just about doable on my own. .. with two people, it'd be fine, and in a car, twould be fine.
It's almost worth asking h2g2 if anyone's prepared to drive oxford-bristol to give saturnine a computer.
hmm.. any ideas, anyone?

according to http://www.thetrainline.com, a cheap day return would be twelve quid.

That would be about $25 CDN and I could send it by wire if you want. <?>

Well, I'm in the country until friday (leaving early friday morning) and working monday.. if you can get a ticket to me for, say, thursday - and I can find something to stick the machine in, then that might work.
Deadline
njan (afh) Posted Feb 23, 2003
I suppose I could persuade my parents to let me leave the machine in a room in their house, and at some point in the future, dear Sat can come and pick it up. .. I haven't even started packing for friday yet.

How about checking if there are any Bristol Uni students from oxford who have a car and would be willing to courier...a monitor on a train.
If I wasn't working I would have been able to do it bloody work. How about posting something on the wessex researchers page...if meetsheep can travel the globe we must be able to get a computer 100 miles down the M4.

I still think we should ask h2g2.
could you do that? *incredibly appealing sweet smile*.. I'm bogged down with writing letters to family members (including my father) who I won't see before I go to the US, packing, and a lot of other stuff, at the moment.

*bah* spose so *grumble* seeing as I can't think of anything more pressing on my time than preventing the tea from burning
*wanders off trying to think of the most attention grabbing subject line knowing it will end up being dull*

PQ Posted Feb 23, 2003
I've just burnt the tea
Message is posted - along with the dates I *might* be able to drive the journey.
