The Tower of Song

Well my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day
Oh in the Tower of Song
I said to Hank Williams: how lonely does it get?
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
A hundred floors above me
In the Tower of Song
I was born like this, I had no choice
I was born with the gift of a golden voice
And twenty-seven angels from the Great Beyond
They tied me to this table right here
In the Tower of Song
So you can stick your little pins in that voodoo doll
I'm very sorry, baby, doesn't look like me at all
I'm standing by the window where the light is strong
Ah they don't let a woman kill you
Not in the Tower of Song
Now you can say that I've grown bitter but of this you may be sure
The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor
And there's a mighty judgement coming, but I may be wrong
You see, you hear these funny voices
In the Tower of Song
I see you standing on the other side
I don't know how the river got so wide
I loved you baby, way back when
And all the bridges are burning that we might have crossed
But I feel so close to everything that we lost
We'll never have to lose it again
Now I bid you farewell, I don't know when I'll be back
There moving us tomorrow to that tower down the track
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly
From a window in the Tower of Song
Yeah my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day
Oh in the Tower of Song

Well only a very few hairs are grey and *the places where I used to play* I still do but it reminded me of myself today.

Well, I'm *salt and pepper* with mostly pepper right now, except for some grey patches on my beard. Another reason to shave it when I have lost some face fat.

Saturnine Posted Jan 6, 2003
Aaaaah no. Don't shave it off. I would be most upset...although, I don't know why...
And, if you have something that you know balances out your facial features, don't get rid of it just for the sake of change. That would be like me getting rid of my dolly fringe.
Leave it be young man It will only make you go blind

Now in Vienna there's ten pretty women
There's a shoulder where Death comes to cry
There's a lobby with nine hundred windows
There's a tree where the doves go to die
There's a piece that was torn from the morning
And it hangs in the Gallery of Frost
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay Take this waltz, take this waltz
Take this waltz with the clamp on its jaws
Oh I want you, I want you, I want you
On a chair with a dead magazine
In the cave at the tip of the lily
In some hallways where love's never been
On a bed where the moon has been sweating
In a cry filled with footsteps and sand
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay Take this waltz, take this waltz
Take its broken waist in your hand
This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz
With its very own breath of brandy and Death
Dragging its tail in the sea
There's a concert hall in Vienna Where your mouth had a thousand revi
ews
There's a bar where the boys have stopped talking
They've been sentenced to death by the blues
Ah, but who is it climbs to your picture
With a garland of freshly cut tears?
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay Take this waltz, take this waltz
Take this waltz it's been dying for years
There's an attic where children are playing
Where I've got to lie down with you soon
In a dream of Hungarian lanterns
In the mist of some sweet afternoon
And I'll see what you've chained to your sorrow
All your sheep and your lilies of snow
Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay Take this waltz, take this waltz
With its "I'll never forget you, you know!"
This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz ...
And I'll dance with you in Vienna
I'll be wearing a river's disguise
The hyacinth wild on my shoulder,
My mouth on the dew of your thighs
And I'll bury my soul in a scrapbook,
With the photographs there, and the moss
And I'll yield to the flood of your beauty
My cheap violin and my cross
And you'll carry me down on your dancing
To the pools that you lift on your wrist Oh my love, Oh my love
Take this waltz, take this waltz It's yours now.
It's all that there is

It's four in the morning, the end of December I'm writing you now just to see if you're better New York is cold, but I like where I'm living There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening. I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert You're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record. Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair She said that you gave it to her That night that you planned to go clear Did you ever go clear? Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder You'd been to the station to meet every train And you came home without Lili Marlene And you treated my woman to a flake of your life And when she came back she was nobody's wife. Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth One more thin gypsy thief Well I see Jane's awake -- She sends her regards. And what can I tell you my brother, my killer What can I possibly say? I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you I'm glad you stood in my way. If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free. Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes I thought it was there for good so I never tried. And Jane came by with a lock of your hair She said that you gave it to her That night that you planned to go clear -- Sincerely, L. Cohen

Not Cohen but as I said elsewhere my favourite tune of all time. A band that is not slotable in any description, they almost could be country or rock or bluegrass or hillbilly or jazz or blues. Blue Rodeo from an album they wrote in English Bay, ten minutes from where I write this. The album is called Five Days in July because believe it or not they wrote the entire album in a funky little hotel over the beach in five days.
*Dark Angel*
I met this girl
She walked through one of my dreams
She kissed my eyes and everything
That she said
Made so much sense to me
That I still feel like I'm half asleep.
My dark angel
She gave me diamonds for eyes
She walked by now I'm hypnotised
By this dream
That just won't stop
And i feel
Like I've always just been
In this dream
The rumours of Heaven
Only speed the truth on Earth
My Dark Angel
Shine your light upon my curse
You are the other that I have to find
Until I do
I guess I'll see you 'round my mind
So Colorado
I the place I have to go
I heard a rumour
She loves the mountains and the snow
My Dark Angel
She made me diamonds for eyes
My Dark Angel
I offer you my heart
My Dark Angel
I think I loved you from the start.
'Cause there's this face that I know
That I've never seen
Some times I feel
Like I'm livin' in someone else's dream
And I wonder
Just into who's dream did I walk
Oh, My Dark Angel
Shine your light on me
Shine your light
Shine your light
On me
