I can't believe you haven't heard of beetroot.
Here goes.
Beetroot is a root vegetable that is grown in the U.K. and Europe.
A ripe beetroot can be anywhere from the size of a grape up to the size of a large orange.
The most noticable feature of a beetroot is its colour, red. When beetroot are pickled, the vineger turns into a syruppy red fluid.
When someone blushes they are said to have gone 'beetroot'.
Boiled beetroot can be bland but with some seasoning, it makes a lovely sandwich.
Hope this helps

aaahhhh!! i understand now here in the US we can a blush being beetred instead of beetroot. so in other words a beetroot is just that...the bottom end of the beet. i've had them and if in the mood they are quite good. it happens to be one of those things that if not prepaired right i can't handle but if they do them right then i love them. have never tried them pickled but will put it on my list of things to try .

Yes, mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy, all lovely with fish and chips. (not all at once)
Have a good one...

actually, dried prunes aren't all that bad .
as for mushy peas...don't like those, i like my veggies to have some crunch to them. everyone around me (remember i live in the sunny south...alabama) thinks i am nuts because i don't boil my veggies until they look something like babyfood.

I did a stir fry last night, chicken in bacon and tomato sauce with sliced carrot. The carrots were definately still crunchy, I got full marks from the GF - only the second meal I've cooked for her.

i enjoy a good stirfry, vegi's are still crisp and it's something that you can't go wrong with . it doesn't matter how little you have in the house you can, if nothing else, always 'whip' up a good stirfry with no trouble.
now for the part...you are cooking for your girlfriend?! most men (at least around here) have allergic reactions to cooking...breaks them out in hives or something . their idea of cooking is dialing the local pizza shop and having it delivered. i admit my other half does enjoy cooking but he was the odd potato .
