... and welcome to h2g2. My name is Solnushka and I am one of the volunteer ACEs, which basically means that I flit around greeting new researchers like yourself, spelling really badly in the process and helping out wherever I can.
I sympathize with the decision to get straight down to it, by the way. Dive in with both feet (to mix metaphors), that's the ticket. I also sympathize with the great trips I haven't taken thing, though in my case its cos I seem to have a small phobia about travelling. Not arriving, just the hassle of getting there Still, there's always next time.
