Myjo - Keeper of Decisions That Should Never be Made on Two Hours of Sleep

Hey Strider!

I know you're not around as much these days. I don't get the chance to hang here much, myself. When/if you get the chance, I was interested to know what you think of the new movie. Happy Holidays!

Evil Zombie Strider

Actually, by happystance, I just happened to check up on old hootoo.

SPOILERS FOLLOW

I was quite happy with it on the whole. Didn't like it quite as much as fellowship, but it had some great stuff. I think treebeard and gollum were both dealt with beautifully, and thought that the good gollum/bad gollum conflict was conveyed very well. I thought Strider falling off of the cliff was stupid. I just don't see why they felt the need to do that. The battle of helms deep was good, though. Didn't like how long they spent on arwen (i've hated her movie incarnation from the very beginning), but I thought that the legolas/gimli thing started to shape quite nicely, as well as merry and pippens characters. On the whole, good stuff. Those wargs were quite something, eh?

Myjo - Keeper of Decisions That Should Never be Made on Two Hours of Sleep

Sorry it's taken so long to respond. I was actually hoping to learn some GuideML so that I could post a link to a rather lengthy review I wrote on another thread. Alas, I have had no time, as I access H2G2 from work, so I have given up (for now). I could be very brief and say that I agree almost completely with what you wrote, but I'll elaborate. I ADORE Gollum, whereas he was never one of my favorites before. I am extremely disappointed with PJ's handling of both Arwen and Faramir. I understand taking liberties for sake of brevity, but making good guys into bad guys (Faramir)? That's taking creative license a bit far. I know, just like Boromir, he redeemed himself in the end, but he is a completely different character now from the Faramir of the books. This is probably the biggest issue I have with the film. The second would be the fact that Frodo offers the ring to the Nazgul. WTF? And of course, my third great issue was the bit with Aragorn and the cliff. That whole sequence was just silly and stole time from other more relevant parts. Oh well, although I hated it initially, it has grown on me. The good bits are enough to outweigh the bad ones, which is good. Still, I think it's going to always be one of those movies I love to hate, to coin a phrase. It is definitely nowhere near as good as Fellowship, and makes me nervous about Return of the King. LOL, reading back over what I've just written, I sound so harsh! Believe it or not, I do have some nice things to say about the film! Here's the clumsy, old fashioned link to the thread if you have time and want to check it out. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F21199?thread=231520 Good things: Gandalf rocked, especially the opening sequence; Legolas and Gimli's interaction was great; Brad Dourif was fantastic as Wormtongue, and I'm so glad they included the Ents. Hope school is going well! Talk to you later. Myjo

Alright. First off, I am perhaps the biggest anti-Arwen person I know, so I completely agree there. The only reason I didn't mention it is that I still consider it to be a problem from the first film which carries over into the second film! AHAHAHAHAHAH! GRRRR!!!!! Fantasies of doing very violent things to Liv Tyler.

I don't mind the Faramir thing, and here's why. I think PJ was worried that the desire to do right/ easily corrupted nature of men wouldn't be seen, and that people would think that it was just a Borimir thing (not a man thing in general). So, they showed him as easily corruptable, but then he redeamed himself by releasing sam and frodo only through great risk to himself (so we can still go yay for him later on).

The cliff thing was just stupid.

Offers the ring to the nazgul? What? granted, i've only seen it once, but i don't remember this...

Wormtongue was good. What else has he been in? Everybody I ask says "lots of things!" but can't name one.

And for the links, just leave out all the beginning stuff and it works: F21199?thread=231520 you don't have to do anything special. just type it out.
