It all depends on your point of view. At the moment, to me, the ceiling of my computer room happens to be up. If I was doing a handstand, the floor would be up. If I was outside, the sky would be up. If I was underground, the ground would be up. If I was an ant, someone's shoe would probably be up...

What is up to you?

It all depends on how you define 'up'. After all, if I stand with my feet on the ground, and say that from my eyes, my feet are down, then to people the other side of the world, that same direction is actually up. And if they stood on the ground and said that down is the direction from there eyes to their feet, then down is up to me. If you define down as the direction towards the strongest source of gravity acting on you, then downwards is towards the centre of the Earth, at the moment, and thus 'up' would be defined in the same way as the direction away from the strongest source of gravity acting on me, and the direction away from the Earth at the moment.

Yeesh, that was long wasn't it? smiley - erm

yes, but it's true
it's all about physics!!!
(go ahead and groan, i won't hold it against you)
gravity is a centrifugal force pulling you toward the center of the earth - what most people agree to be down
if you really thing about it, though, up is therefore different to each person, because of the curviture of the earth's surface. as two people can not occupy the exact same space at the exact same time, they can never both look up and define "up" as exactly the same thing.

Yes! That's what I was saying! smiley - biggrin
Although my old physics teacher would scream if she heard you saying 'centrifugal'. No such thing... only centripetal force...
