Which states are confusing you Serg?
Its pretty simple you know - your bonafide excited states have wavefunctions which are true eigenfunctions to the wavefunctions of the ground state, whereas your virtual states are composed of wavefunctions which are not eigenfunctions of the wavefunctions of the ground state, and do not in fact actually exist, probably.
Congratulations Sir T

Well I am glad you think so Crazy Man
EXAFS, Electron Diffraction, SSNMR, LCNMR, NQR, EPR and Moessbauer Spectroscopies out of the way now, so I guess I should head on down to Xray Crystal and powder diffraction methods... I have been leaving that one till last as we need to know a lot more of it than we do the minor players in the spectroscopy world.

Sarge! I found you a map of the USA....

I'ts not that big, but supposedly you could actually print it out and it does have all the states on it.... at least then you'd have some idea of where we're talking about when we mention different states...
