Be careful wot you say, you will have an angry mob of black cab drivers over here
I already said I'm a Private Hire driver - only those licensed for Public Hire can call themselves Taxi's.
About 2/3's of Private Hire work is account based so lot's of drivers never ever see cash and as such not much of a target - I'm thinking about switching to an account circuit though.
Also note with both public & (good) private hire, cab driving in London is not the same as other cities in the UK & around the world – our fairs are high, we earn a good wage the reason for this is that we know where were going. Black Cab Drivers (Public Hire) have to Study hard to pass the Knowledge (this normally takes 2 –3 years) so far with private Hire there has been no formal test but most reputable Operators will test drivers before hiring them (although the Public Carriage Office is planning to introduce a basic knowledge & topographical test soon).

in america we just call them /all/ taxi cabs... no offence, really...
Hi Theory
HappyDude Posted Jan 6, 2002
its somewot more complicated here
Private Hire includes stuff like Limo Hire, Chauffer driven executive cars, MPV’s doing airport transfers through to local cab services, all these have one thing in common they cannot legally be called Taxi’s.
If in the unlikly event you want to know more try visiting the websites for

Not yet, things are in a state of flux now, as the “1998 Private Hire Vehicles (London) Act” is slowly being implemented by the Public Carriage Office, perhaps once it is fully implemented.

Hi, Theory:
Your alter ego, , was wondering
in another forum what "GRAH" means.
I can't remember what forum that was,
so I'll give my interpretation in this
one, if you don't mind. I think GRAH means
GReetings Again, Hitchhiker.
It's used by ACEs who inadvertently
greet the same researcher more than
once.

interesting... (a tad surprising cuz Njan said it meant nothing...)
However, NTL, interesting...
