I'm not an Orcadian, but my surname is Spence, which is a surname worth having on those islands. I have visited on four occasions so far, and each tme i'm more impressed than before. I found the people to be warm and welcoming- but then, I was a tourist. I have spoken to a couple of ferry-loupers, though, and they say they have been trated well by the natives.
What I find most impressive about Orkney is the sense of space. Everywhere you go the horizons beckon. And I have discovered that I just can't get enough of neolithic burial chambers. This is not something I ever thought I'd say...

...the horizons. I began to feel as if my head was open to the sky after a while; there seemed an infinate amout of space, filled always with the sound of water.
Usually rain, but forgive me a moment of poetic whimsy.
