I'm planning on going to see The Village before anyone I know spoils the surprise. I am avoiding movie sites and reviews, but I know I'd better see it soon.

Hi JEllen. I know a few people who want to see that one. Once you've been, go ahead and spoil it for me, as I'm not likely to see it until the DVD comes out. smiley - winkeye

Oh wow, the Village was mindblowing! I loved it! Bryce Dallas Howard is a phenomenal actress in it. She plays a blind girl. The movie is a great allegory on the nature of fear. I was soooo ticked off when I got home and saw that a lot of critics had panned it. I thought it was brilliant, and especially loved the cinematography. Some critics did agree with me and "got it", like Peter Travers of Rolling Stone. I thought the scary parts were truly scary, and I loved not knowing exactly what was going on, or where this was really set. And I loved the romance in it. People looking for a horror fright fest are going to be sorely disappointed; but people looking for a thoughtful, even weird, film, will be pleased. Don't want to give more away -- my advice, see it BEFORE you know the whole plot.

PC, if you really want to hear more about it before you see it, we shall have to talk about it on IM. Soon!

Ooohh, I want to see The Village too!

We just rented Iron Giant and love it. I vaguely remember it coming out and not really hearing anything about it. I love the bit where they poke fun at bad acting. It has some nice comments on our shoot first ask questions later mentality, and it's interesting to see how little we have changed since the 50s. It has some mildly frightening parts (for small children) and my two kids sit on the couch comforting each other if one is afraid. It's really sweet.

JEllen, I would LOVE to talk about it on IM. I'll watch for you every night except for tomorrow when I will be watching videos (or not watching that closely, teehee) with K. I shall even try to stay up late if I can! smiley - biggrin

Hi Juliana, hi PC! smiley - biggrin

I hope someone sees The Village soon, so we can put up some big spoiler signs here and have a discussion!

Hrmm, it seems a big Village discussion will not be taking place. Oh well, on to other business:

Garden State was funny. Had some priceless bits, like the shirt that matched the bathroom wall. The guy who wrote/directed/starred in it is very talented, but I cannot remember his name. Anyone know?

Yeah, sorry I can't say anything about the Village. I hadn't even heard of it before that post. And I may see it but not till its cheap. I did ask someone about it just tonight and she hadn't seen it either but she said it had gotten mixed reviews.

Another friend of her's had seen Garden State and said it was very good. I do want to see it. They guy's name I Zach Braff. He is so adorable, too. He reminds me so much of this guy I had a crush on for the longest time (quite) a while back who played me for several years. smiley - grr...smiley - laugh Oh well. I still like Zach Braff. Although I find him so cute as to be painful...maybe I shouldn't see it. He sort of gives me flashbacks. Well enough of that.

I haven't seen many movies lately. I did see "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" with some 12 year olds. It was OK for what it was. They had also rented "13 going on 30" which I did want to see but we didn't end up watching it. Not often I see teenibopper movies anymore.

I just saw "Anchorman" at the cheap theater. Very funny. They showed a preview of "The Village" too. Looks good but still haven't heard either way from anyone who's seen it.

Hi Hellbound!

Haven't seen much in the theaters lately, but I watched World According to Garp on DVD this week. What a wacky movie; I liked it. I especially liked John Lithgow's performance.

I saw that a long time ago. All I remember is having mixed feeligns about it. I usually have about movies based on that author's books. Don't remember the name of the author right now. I just know that someone important always dies in his books and the protagonists are always too late to say goodbye but it provides some redemption or something. smiley - laugh

Lady Pennywhistle - Back with a vengeance! [for a certain, limited value of Vengeance; actual amounts of Vengeance may vary]

watched Anchorman this summer, liked it because I was in a pretty silly mood at the time and it's a fun silly movie.
Have been watching quite a lot of movies lately - Troy some time ago, still ambivalent about it, some good characterisation on one hand but it strayed too far away from the origin for me; then last weekend I watched Kill Bill II with my brother (very good, though the violence is more disturbing), then came back home and watched Confidence on TV (a bit predictable but Dustin Hoffman is as brilliant as ever), and the next day caught Girl, Interrupted on video (interesting, especially because I've been dealing with a friend I'm afraid might be Borderline); and today I went to the cinematheque to watch a completely obscure Finnish movie called The Total Balalaika Show, which was very weird and absolutely hilarious. Good times.

Yeah, it was, just a bit predictable.

smiley - biggrinIt's a good month in the cinematheque, plenty of things I want to watch. And I have lots of free time now too because the school year hadn't started yet.

I'm going to see "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" tomorrow. It opens here tomorrow and i'm going to the first showing matinee. First time I've been to a movie on opening day/night since Star Trek Wrath of Khan. smiley - weird

Hi Hellbound!

I want to see Sky Captain too, and might to see it tomorrow too! Depends on when my sister wants to see it. I definitely want to see it in the first week, so I can see it on the giant screen. I love Jude Law, and I love science fiction.

I generally like scifi too and I think the retro thing is really a great idea. I wonder if it will start a trend. Well I guess there already is a trend of remake type things - Charlies Angels, Starsky and Hutch, Brady Bunch etc but I've not seem new concept movies with that retro thing going on. smiley - smiley I hope it's good and that the opening day crowd isn't too obnoxious.

Hellbound, what did you think of Sky Captain? I thought it was great fun! Very cool Expressionist look to the whole film. And Jude Law is easy on the eyes. smiley - winkeye
