Me, the Universe and Everything
I understand that, as a new h2g2 researcher, I'm supposed to write an introduction about myself. Therefore, I have assembled long list of irrelevant and semi-relevant information about myself.
My name is Koen Weddepohl, which, to many, sounds very strange. Some people seem to think it sounds like something from star-wars (If it'd amuse you, feel free to yell "I am your father, Luke!" at me). When people read my name, most assume it's pronounced "Ko-en". It's not that I mind being called "Ko-en", but my name is actually pronounced more like "Koon". Think "cocoon" and leave out the "co" part. While my last name, "Weddepohl", may look a lot more complicated than my first name, it is actually pretty much announced the way you think it is.
There is, of course, a perfectly reasonable explanation for the fact that my name sounds so funny. I'm from the Netherlands, also known as Holland - to my knowledge the only country with two names. If you don't know where the hell Holland is, don't feel bad, I probably wouldn't know either if I didn't live there. Holland is a small country that lies west from Germany, East From England and North from Belgium (Belgium being another small country north from France). Holland is currently probably best known for it's (semi-)legal drugs, prostitution and mercy-killing. In case you are wondering: yes, I agree with legalising those things. Tulips, windmils and clogs are also commonly associated with Holland. Enough about Holland though, maybe I'll write an entry about it some time.
Back to me. I am a sexually frustrated, single and desperate, teen(/young adult) from the Netherlands with funny hair (bright red mohawk at the moment). While writing this I am 17 years old, almost 18.
One thing I like to do is read. Books I mean. My favourite Dutch authors are "Ronald Giphart" and "Arnon Grunberg". I love Giphart's books because of the humour and the detailed sex-scenes. When it comes to English books, nothing beats Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" and all it's sequels (which explains how I ended up at this site). In fact I'm a pretty big Douglas Adams fan. I listened to the Hitchiker radio shows and watched the television series. Moreover, I use towels on a daily basis.
Quite unoriginally, I like to watch a movie every once in a while. My favourite movie is probably "Fight Club", though "The Matrix" comes pretty close. Opposed to popular belief, Fight Club is not some stupid action-picture where people constantly beat eachother up, it has actually got a brilliant story line. Some more of my favourite movies include: "American Beauty", "Memento", "Pulp Fiction", "Star Trek - First contact", "Dude, where's my car" and both the Bill & Ted movies. "Titanic", by the way, is crap, which unfortunately, is not a widely accepted fact.
Let's just skip my favourite TV-shows and music. I don't feel like talking about them and it'd probably be pretty boring. To sum it up: I like funny stuff and hate most popular stuff.
My philosophical views on Me, the Universe and Everything:
First of all, I'm an atheist, I do not believe there is any kind of God. In my view, life is utterly pointless. I also believe the universe is nothing like we perceive it. We see trees, houses, cars and annoying people. In reality, though, it's all just a big collection of particles, or, better yet, energy.
"Well" you might ask "If life is so pointless, why don't you just end it?". Ending my life is equally pointless to not ending it. Moreover, like all living beings, nature has given me an urge to survive. I tend to give in to that urge.
For some reason, people need a goal in their life, which is why religions were created. I believe the only goal in life worth pursuing is happiness. I believe material possesions can only help achieve temporary happiness. To achieve permanent happiness requires a change in mind rather than a change in the physical world.
I've pretty much reached the end of my attention span. Besides, I think this piece of text has become long enough. I hope it helped you understand me a bit, or at least somewhat amused you.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
