Losing/Finding Home

Hello. I'm studying Aikido(a martial art based on locks and throws) in Japan, I've been here for nearly three years and now I face the prospect of returning home (depending upon how I approach the powers that be here). I want to stay longer and to be honest the prospect of returning home is daunting and a little unwelcome. I have worked hard to make a life here and apart from missing my family I feel more comfortable living here than I would if I returned.
I won't go into greater detail yet but I hope to develop a piece about the options I and other 'almost ex-patriates' face as well as the experience of living in another culture and the effect it has. I just can't see how your nationality should be said to define who you are and why it is considered so strange to try and abandon the notion that it does. I'm not running away, I'm just trying to live without harming anyone and at the same time fulfilling my ambitions to live freely.
I'm interested to hear from anyone who has views on these matters and look forward to discussing them. I hope I hear from you soon.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
