The Job Market
Posted Oct 29, 2002
Well, my college career is beginning to draw to a close (finally!), and I find myself facing a terrible prospect: what if I can't find a job? I'm sure I'm neither the first nor the last to feel this way, but it is terrifying all the same. For the first time in my life, I have no idea where I'm going to be a year from now! I don't know what city, state, or even country I'll be living in. And then the big question comes back: what if I can't find a job?? I hear on the news every day how the job market is terrible these days. That is definitely not what I want to hear.
Then comes the question, what was I meant to do? My best friend is in her first year of medical school. I've known her for 9 years, since we were freshman in high school, and she's always known what she wanted to do. She told me the first day she started medical school, she felt like her life was finally beginning. I want to feel that way, too. And every now and then I feel like I've finally realized what it is that I was born to do. Unfortunately, every time it happens, it is fleeting, and it's always something different. I was going to be a musician for 7 years, then I wanted to be in business, then it was...god knows what, and now it's publishing.
The funny thing is, my friend and I, we always have this conversation about how you know when you're in love. While I'm married, she has never really had time for a boyfriend until recently. She asks me, how do you know when you're in love?, and I tell her, you just know...it's like me and J., you just know! So I guess what I need to know is, is finding my calling like falling in love? Will I just know? Or am I grasping for something that doesn't exist...the perfect job? Only time will tell. I know I'll survive - I only hope my wallet does.
