Welcome to h2g2 - you certainly look like you've got the GuideML thing down pat
My name is Feisor and I am an ACE (Assistant Community Editor) here at h2g2.
We ACEs are here to assist new researchers so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
You can leave a message on my space just by clicking on my name at the top of this message or by hitting the reply button below - it won't hit back (usually).
The "Italics" (they are the people who run this place - so-called because their names are displayed in bold italics - God Bless 'Em) have left a message for newcomers at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Welcome-Newcomers
it's got a lot of the basic background and how-tos that you will need - a good place to start
If you want to explore try Sheas List of links
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A534953
or
Jeffs Welcome Page
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A579431
Both are great places to begin your journey .
And finally, the editors of our own newspaper The H2G2 Post have made up a page of links - you can find it at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A616718 and then you can read The Post
The following paragraph is (I am sure) probably unnecessary but I am posting it with all my recent "welcomes" - please take it in the spirit of friendship because that is how it is offered
You have joined h2g2 at a very sad time - please remember that this site is one which thrives on respect for others, and balanced, rational and considered discussion - we hope that all new researchers will treat everyone in the community with the respect that they expect for themselves.
Well - that should keep you busy for a while I am sure that you will love this community as much as we do There's lots of things to see, clubs to join and people to meet - please don't be shy - just jump right in - this is a friendly place. But be careful - it can become quite addictive - believe me I know
Enjoy!!
Have fun!!!
and above all DON'T PANIC!!!

hello - thanks for writing so quickly! I wasn't sure if my links were going to be OK or not.. (I added another one to a pagan site you might want to check out, i don't know what the consensus here is on religious/political things)
I quite fancy writing a bit about either the Amazons (didn't seem to be covered), paganism (couldn't find anything either) or goths/cyber stuff in the UK. Maybe with some clubs.. where should i start? I'm going to have a bit of a look around first but i would like to contribute. Obviously i'll restrain myself from writing 'mostly harmless' in every entry. I know quite a lot about these three items (and a few others) so if others might find them of interest i'd like to get stuck in...
what is the ruling about using links to websites for clubs? they are commercial, but also cultural... not really advertising is it?
is there a reason we can't use our own pictures? If I wanted to draw a picture in a similar style to the ones being used would it be possible to have it approved for use? is there some sort of proceedure for this? I can understand why we can't just go around uploading things (space for a start)..
Anyway sorry about ranting so much
thanks again

So many questions .... but that's what I'm an ACE for
one at a time ....
Contributing - best place to start is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Contribute
and then, when you know how and what, check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/PeerReview to find out how to get your entry accepted into the Edited Guide
Links - links can be posted on your user space and unless they are inflammatory, obscene etc they should be ok - they WILL be moderated if they are "broken" but you will get notification by email - your links are fine - I will check them out more fully when I have time
The issue with posting your own pics is not space it is to do with copyright issues - but you can link through to an external site where you have created the art work - all graphics displayed on h2g2 come either from the Graphics Library (which I see you have found) or from "approved" pages such as http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A540578 - have a look - you may find something there (good luck)
Hope this answers your questions - let me know if you have others

The GuideML Code is
of course you can align "LEFT" "RIGHT" or "CENTER" (or maybe it's "CENTRE" but that should give you the general idea
Happy to help

Thankyou
Do you like my ??
Whats the etiquette about nicking other peoples' code? I did post a little message asking if it was OK and i have altered it somewhat but even so...
also, there is a bit of code to do with the fish inside the MAQUEE command that sayd "behaviour="alternate" - I was wondering what OTHER sort of behaviours a fish could have ?
(very beginning htmler......)

I see that you have creditted Twinkle on your page and linked to her page - that's a nice thing to do
If I am going to "pinch" code I usually leave a note on the page asking if I may - I haven't been knocked back yet - people are usually really nice around here.
Why don't you ask Twinkle what are the alternatives to "alternate" - I have no idea - I'd be interested to know too
I'm just a GuideML beginner too

Yeah ... well that's all too much for me!!
If you see something you like, you can see how it's done by typing http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/testuserpageXXXXX where XXX is the user number, for instance to view the code for my page type http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/testuserpage38014 - as I said, it's probably nice if you ask before "pinching" code but you can have anything off my page without asking
Hope this helps

I have a proper domain so i'm meant to be writing something to put on it but i'm getting a bit confused about all the ftp stuff.. this is much easier.. its like nursery html
They should teach you html in junior school it would make everything easier..
..sorry about messing up that haiku thread..
I shall go and have a look at your page now!

ooh I was going to ask, in 'preferences' what is the difference between 'normal' and 'expert' user mode?
pity there isnt an emoticon for as well...

Feisor - -0- Generix I made it back - sortof ... Posted Sep 25, 2001
I think that in some schools they do teach how to do web pages and stuff - so that would involve HTML - some of our younger researchers seem quite adept at it - but not me
I tried the expert mode once but it didn't seem like my sort of thing - I suggest you give it a go and see what you think - you can always change it back - I did
There isn't a but there is a geek smiley - not used much though, which I think says a lot

I didn't notice any "mess up" in the haiku thread - it doesn't matter anyway - no one here worries about that sort of thing - everyone's too nice Keep contributing .... that's what this place is all about
Key: Complain about this post
