for sizes, i have a quote below from an e-mail which conatins the h2g2 specs:

"Headers are allowed to be 500 pixels wide and 100 pixels
high. Otherwise graphics tend to be limited to 200 pixels wide or
high. I can't remember a file size spec but the 20K limit on main
graphics seems plausible for headers/banners too. Normally graphics
should have a single pixel black border."

I want to comment on a couple of things in this journal entry.

I'm afraid that you've been informed incorrectly. We don't blob pictures simply because someone has made one. We have limited resources, which is why we only do them for regular columns for The Post, and occasinally some of their other activities if we think that it is for the benefit of the Community as a whole, and for Edited Guide and other 'official' activities. This art is done by Researchers who have joined the Community Artists scheme. I don't want to see either you, or anyone who makes a graphic, disappointed when we have to say no.

What you put on your own site is up to you, but permission to use pictures on h2g2 cannot be given to Researchers. The decision is made by the Editors, and the permission has to be given directly to us, rather than a third party. It would be better if you didn't give this impression.

a) there is a chance the image could be blobbed. 0% chance is a chance. and the no guarantees said everywhere meant no wrong impression was given.
b) some non-community artists have had graphics blobbed snce the start of the scheme
c) i didn't give permission, i said THEY were GIVING permission. big difference. start reading things more accurately.
d) don't say 'no' until you have heard my very, long, very detailed plea
e) if you have such limited resources then you should start concentrating your recourses onmore then just one area, the post, and start using the 'community' artist scheme to benefit the 'community', as it seems so far the schem should be called 'Edited Guide and Post Artists' and the community is being left out big time.

I have to agree with you spook. Merely going by the title "community artist", gives a false impression. But I have a lot of respect for the itallics, and so realise there are a great deal of things going on behind the scenes that we don't know about (tea breaks and solitaire sessions - only kidding ).

To be fair they did try to recruit more people recently to improve the situation, but there are only so many members who have enough time to devote to drawing for the community.

But I think perhaps if a "rogue" drawing can go through the community art system and get the go a head it should be allowed in.

If you read my posting, I did say that permission couldn't be *given* to Researchers, only to us. Not that you were *giving* permission. Sorry if I wasn't clear there.

We do want to be able to do more for the Community than we do now. We recently had a recruitment drive for more artists, and we had a few more try out. As soon as we have enough artists, we'll be able to do more than just the Edited Guide entries. But there are still only a few people in the office, so we still won't be able to blob many more pictures, as it takes a lot of time.

that's one of my main points Verc. the Community Artists themselves my have to focus attentions on the EG and Post, but if the community is not allowed to provide any art of quality following h2g2 graphic guidelines for the community then the community is not able to develop and the fact that we have an Artist scheme doesn't mean anything since the same amount of Art for the EG and Talking points is being created as before the scheme, and the same people who wre doing graphics for the Post are still doing them. This means that the Artist scheme does not benefit the community in any way.

Mina - i wasn't giving the permission, the researchers were giving the editors permission!

also i'm sure you could find the time to blob 1 extra picture for only 1 week for the Spaced Out Guide, a picture done by someone who is actually trying out now to be a community artist anyway.

Sorry spook, I'm obviously not making myself clear. I'll try to phrase it another way. It seemed as if you were telling Researchers that by sending art to you, they were giving permission to h2g2. I was trying to explian that permission can only be given to us directly, not to anyone else.

And yes, we probably could find time for that - we intend to offer graphics to h2g2 clubs and societies that meet certain criteria. You'd be more than welcome to apply in the same way that everyone else will be. One a week was the provisional figure that we had in mind.

One thing I hate about arguments on the internet is the way everyone quotes everyone else... it's hell in peer review
