Hi there!

So, another one who knows Saleems! Do you also remember the Jaaneman by any chance? They used to do the most fantastic Masala Dosa's, but only on Saturdays, when Mother was roped into service!

I loved these & it was fantastic for a (fairly strict) vegetarian like me since they were high-caste Hindu, at saleems you were always slightly edgy....

I was to be found haunting the Ladypool Road area throughout the 70's & 80's, giving my age away here, but who cares! When were you last around there?

Do you ever get any awkward questions from little smiley - fish about the veggie issue?

Great to hear you've been to Africa too!

*another nostalgic sigh*

Do pop across to my page sometime; maybe even drop into the latest "eyes" thread on my journal space; where most of my friends say hello & do the trivial chat bit!

I see you are connected with Maggy, I sent her something ages ago on 360, no doubt it's now buried in my backlog somewhere....

*pang of guilt*

Great to squeak to you!

smiley - cheers

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

It was such a long time ago. I was a student in the 70s and was around in the 80s too. No I don't remember the Jaaneman. In those days, I wasn't a veggie, so there wasn't much of an issue around the type of food, as long as it wasn't too hot, although some of us liked it as hot as it came.

Do you remember a cider pub called the Greyhound - a bit rough, but great for student types. Off Queensway. I can't now remember the name of the road.

No, the only questions I get from little smiley - fish are around meat eaters - he wants to be one. He also wants to eat 'popular' brands (non-organic). I think this is because of peer pressure at school. I know one older child taunts him about not being able to eat meat. It's a bit awkward, as he has a dairy and wheat intolerance. The intolerance testing showed him as being clear on meat.

Again, Africa was a long time ago. I'd love to go back and I have an ambition to climb Kilimanjaro and to get to the top this time. I'm currently dating someone who lived a large part of his life in what was then Rhodesia (his parents went out when he was seven) and then South Africa. He has talked about taking me there and who knows, one day, it might happen.

What bits of Africa have you been to?

Interestingly, I've just come back from seeing Also Ran 1, who has also lived in both. We had a great time - little smiley - fish went swimming with her son while we had a chat. She's also French - I see you're currently living in Angouleme, which is twinned with my home town of Bury! Now there's connections for you!

Yes, I met Maggy/Meg at the Summer Meet last year. We've been corresponding on and off ever since, We seem to have a good deal in common.

Squeak? Ah, the cheese factor. I presume you've met Dr Montague Trout? smiley - laugh

Thanks for popping by. Do have some smiley - tea

Hey, we DO seem to have some common ground here, we will probably discover we've met in supposed "real" life somewhere!

Where were you a student? I was at CBCE as it was then known, teacher training college, Westbourne Rd, Edgbaston.

I certainly do know the Grey hound, though the memories are hazy as you'd expect smiley - drunk!

Little smiley - fish no doubt finds it hard, peer group pressure, not to mention bloody advertising smiley - grr; Mac Donalds are now apparently sending gift packs out to schools! (if you want to see my totally biased opinion on this lot, visit my column in smiley - thepost; The Hootoo Home of Today, the one on Mc Donalds is at A1019422 )

Africa: I was in Malawi 1985 to 87. Yes, I do know Dr Trout, we've got a lot of places in common, Malawi & Middle East. I'd love to go back to Africa, maybe I might give the M.E a miss for a while though, fascinating, but a bit dodgy at present!smiley - erm

Angoulême is a great town, small but lots going on, not least of which is the International Comics Festival, biggest in Europe, sort of like Cannes for comics! Yes, Bury indeed, small world as you say! It's quite funny, 'cos Leroy Somer is a big factory at the end of my road & discovered other hooters with connections to this too, it's got a branch in Skelmersdale, Z was originally from there; plus Matholwych goes out to Angouleme LS on busines quite often.

So, what's life like in Bury? Does Angoulême ever get mentioned?

smiley - cheers

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

I've not lived in Bury for quite some while, so I can't tell you what's happening there now. My parents moved to the Isle of Wight almost 20 years ago and I've had little reason to go back. When my aunt died three or four years ago, I did visit briefly, but only to see my old home - I used to live opposite the football ground at Gigg Lane.

Actually, a while back, I met someone on hootoo now living in Lagos (Seth U166168), who used to visit the factory where my dad used to work. Very small world.

Funnily enough, I didn't get to visit Angoulême. I went on exchange visits to Germany and my parents couldn't afford both. There's a place in Bury called Angoulême Way! As I remember it goes through where the old market used to be. I think the market still sells hot black puddings, which in my meat eating days I used to love. (smiley - sorry - I expect you'll think that's gross!)

The International Comics Festival sounds like fun. How long does it last and what happens there?

I was at the Aston University campus at Birmingham Polytechnic.

I too have strong feelings about McDonalds and came under strong pressure for a while to let little smiley - fish eat 'happy meals', which come with a small toy. He still asks to go, but not with much expectation of actually going these days. I didn't know about them sending out gift packs to schools. smiley - groan
