Might be easier to continue here if you don't mind.
Now the US right now and for the last so many years has been mainly a two party political system. The two sides or political parties being the Republicans (who's main battle cry is stronger state gov weaker fed gov') and Democrats (stronger Fed Gov't weaker state gov't). The gov't was not set up with a two political party system in place and actually I first Prez the original Gorge W. said that having two main political parties was a very bad thing. Over the years there has been many different parities each with presidential hopefuls and the such...actually there was one called the populist party that was formed with certain issues in mind..the reason I bring this up is they formed got the job done then disbanded…so although it looks mainly like a two party system it is not really...did that make any sense?

Yes that made sense.

The main reason I ask is that my personal experience is colouring the way I think of government.

This country used to be mostly a two party system (with some mostly ignored small parties)until recent times where larger small parties appeared. Larger small parties under First Past the Post system meant that the vote was shared to a degree where by a party could form government with a relatively small percentage. Then you get a government that may represent only 38% of voters. That system meant that the single party with the most votes formed government.

Under MMP as I've already said. Unless a single party get at least 51% percent of the vote a coalition has to be formed. So under MMP a government is formed by a vote majority rather than the single largest voting block.

So yes it was mostly an electrol change. It did however mean that more MP positions were created and I still havent dound the info on any other governmental changes.

I hope I didn't ramble on too long, my brain is still waking up on a cold morning.
