It may look like I do a lot of stuff, but actually most people find me quite boring I'm afraid. Most of my otherwise spare time (in the summer at least) is consummed by cutting and hauling firewood, which is my only winter heat. Most of the other stuff is a little bit here and a little bit there. On top of everything else i have an idea that I'm trying to turn into a book, but I have a problem best described by my brother-in-law as "a** in chair, hands on keyboard, words on page!"

I think your brother in law has it down - everything where it should be . Trust me, when you've done nothing but spent an entire week watching bad British tv (no cable, and it is really bad right now, nothing but sport - not that I object to sport, just not cricket and tennis 24/7...) cutting wood does actually sound exciting.
Actually, I just moved house so I'm doing anything I can that doesn't involve boxes, unpacking or dust, of which there is much.
Is it that cold in the winter that you have to start cutting wood now?

I have an outside woodstove, which heats water for the hotwater baseboard heat inside the house. This furnace (heater, boiler, whatever) takes about two wheelbarrow loads of wood a day, one in the morning when I get home from work and another at night when I leave. (Yes, I work nights. On the nights I work it's a 12 hr. shift!) All the mess, stink, smoke, and fire danger is outside; all the heat is inside. Now to actually answer your Question. I need to start heating full time in the end of Sept. or the start of Oct., depending on the wether, and burn, usually, 'till the middle of april. Between 6 or 7 mos. of burning at two wheelbarrow loads of wood a day..... that's a lot of wood. And you can never have too much, because there's always another winter coming!!
Still this is better than where I grew up. When I was a kid (long, long ago), my hometown averaged over 230 inches of snow a year!!! On the other hand, you get used to anything eventually. Or if you don't know any better.
