DA ; Simply Vicky: Don't get pithy with me!

In memoriam, Lindsay Mark Pedlar 1953-2004. I heard that Lindsay, known as "Wedge" (and I'll never know why he had that nickname) died on August 18th, in Rotorua.
I have a photo of five of us - my boyfriend at the time, my brother, me, and two of my brother's friends out at a nightclub in 1980. Now two of us in that photo are dead - my brother and Lindsay.
It is sunny, but cold outside smiley - brr and I have been here on h2g2 too long (as is often the case these days.) Yesterday, we went to the University for a courses and careers day, which was smiley - cool and got what seems like 4 million brochures. People kept giving me pamphlets on studying theology. Is God trying to tell me something?
Jim went out to ASS (Auckland Sword and Shield) and practised some mediaeval fighting techniques. What fun.. and now it's back to the Mathematics for him. What a name for the club, though! Donkeys are fine, but imagine if we were in America? smiley - laugh

I’m sorry to hear that a friend of yours has passed away.

Re weather: how long will it take until the first spring flowers will appear in your area?
In Europe (at least in Austria) summer is coming to its final. The trees are already losing their leaves. smiley - blue All in all it wasn’t a nice summer (rain, cold temperatures).

Are you planning to go to university? Or maybe your son? smiley - book

Hi, Della,

So sorry to hear about your friend. I've lost two in the last year or so. Very sad smiley - rose

Re. the mediaevil fighting some of my sons friends do it to. They haven't persuaded him to join in yet, but he appears to enjoy it.

Oh, BTW, it's the wrong spelling for America isn't it smiley - rofl

Like smiley - blackcat our "summer" here in the UK has not been good. In fact it has been a wash out. Floods, thunderstorms, cold, windy, with intermittent sunny spells. We can only hope for a lovely autumn to set us up for the winter.

I am out at a large garden show for the whole of next weekend so fingers crossed for at least reasonable weather, please!! smiley - magic needed. I have had enough of being blown away and rained on for one year. It is usually a lovely event with lovely weather but if wet some areas flood smiley - wah

Take care,

Websailor

It should have started getting warm already by now, katkodl, but it is still freezing in the mornings or up until about 1300 hours. It was 4 degrees celsius at 0730 this morning! So, I find it very hard to believe in Global warming, as it seems to be getting colder every year!
My son is going off to university - he made his first application online on Satruday. He is nervous and excited.

He loves the mediaeval fighting, and comes home and wants to show me what he has learned. luckily, he doesn't bring a sword home!
I do hope you don't get floods, Websailor, those are really horrible!
I am sorry to hear about your losses... smiley - rose

tonight it is quite chilly here or so all the other staff here tell me, I prefer it

I've got some friends who do live-action role-playing, dressing up as elves and goblins and running around bashing each other with fake swords

always been too self-conscious to do it myself smiley - erm

I don't know what the ultimate aim of ASS is - they meet in a Scout Hall of a Sunday morning, and practice fighting, and making such things as vambraces and belts, and do this for fun (though they had a tournament Jim didn't enter, just watched the other week.)

True, and he does have enormous fun... He's had to revise a story he wrote about girl warriors and posted on a website, now he has learned so much.

Hi Adelaide! Thought I'd drop by and say hello, since you've impressed me by the way you've fought the good fight in a certain other, rather bloodstained thread. smiley - ok

I am sorry to hear about your friend. smiley - rose I am very lucky to have got to 44 without having that happen to me. Considering how much I used to drink, I wouldn't say that I've always been healthy company!

But turning to ASS, so to speak: smiley - winkeye I'm planning to audition to join the Bradford University Society for Operettas and Musicals. smiley - musicalnote The society is, of course, commonly known by its acronym: BUSOM. smiley - tit

BUSOM smiley - laugh! Jim is off to ASS today, he was going to give it a miss to study, but the lure of sword play was too much. Operettas, my Mum was into those, sounds smiley - cool!
That certain thread just keeps being interesting, doesn't it?

Well yes, it certainly has been an interesting battle. There is generally so little hostility on h2g2 that it is peculiarly disturbing when it suddenly materialises. I have found GrandpaBuckie's attemps to sweet-talk Scandrea particularly creepy, and the way he recently did it by trying to paint *me* as the sinister con-man was quite outrageous. smiley - steam But I wonder how he'll react to Scandrea's announcement that she's voting Kerry?

Believe it or not, as well as BUSOM there is another society at Bradford University called the Bradford University Music Society. I'm sure you can work out the acronym for yourself. smiley - winkeye

Scandrea isn't too thrilled herself, either, at being infantilised! Did you know you were a Svengali? smiley - laugh
Bradford University seems to lend itself to these acronyms, doesn't it?

GB only seems to have 2 modes of address
patronising or rude
so far he only seems to have made the USians on the thread even less likely to vote for Bush than they originally were
