h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Everything has changed, and I don't feel like myself - not the self that I knew. It's been 10 days, and one of the painful things is that some things can't and won't ever change - such as Empty Sky's space. I am working on normality, a normality that must be completely different to what it was. I am playing the Lord of the Rings soundtracks over and over, because they feel really healing, battles notwithstanding.
I have been listening to the Empty Sky album.. I hate it and like it at the same time. I keep wondering if Garth would have approved of our using it for the funeral. I think he would....Heaps of people came to the funeral, Therese's family, Sally and Jeremy, all of us, the people from QFL, including Warren and the Indian family who were Garth's landlords at Albrecht Avenue - such a lovely surprise!
I feel that the funeral really did give closure… So Cosmica Rama Ding Dong a thing to say, but it's right. I read the poems posted by Matholwch and Bod, I was going to use the John Donne but the celebrant beat me to it. Jim is back to school - he needs school, to feel grounded. His teachers and friends have been so staunch and wonderful!
In the world, there was a hellish bombing in Spain in the last 24 hours, and the pictures of casualties were heart-rending. Humans' inhumanity to humans. Oh, what fools we mortals be!

And then I read your journal, and a few other things besides.

I'm sorry for your loss.
Speking from experience, it gets less unpleasant as time goes on and what you're left with isn't all that bad - the feelings, the memories, touches and traces of emotion. And you'll find that you develop a sort of bittersweet smile reflex over the oddest little things.

Oh, and that Dogon entry? It's done.

Yes, I am experiencing more bitter than sweet as yet, but I can sort-of see how it can become memory, and there is so much to remind me! Like a joke in a shop window - an advert for a credit card, where the cardholder's name was given as "Mike Hunting" - he would have appreciated that so much! (I saw it the other day...)

I'm very glad you are feeling buoyed up by kindness. I read the profile of ES that you wrote to Jordan. I think writing could prove to be very soothing for you. And I am sure you will always keep Garth alive in your heart and in your memories. Like the joke you mentioned that you felt sure he would have liked. I think with time that sort of thing won't hurt quite so much and then you will be able to smile at the memories and reminders.

He was blessed to have such a loving family.

Apparition is setting up a website with some of Garth's photos and stuff, in his memory. He or I will post the URL when it's done, if anyone is interested. That's a really good idea (Apparition's) for keeping his memory going.
