Blame me!
Hi - I've just signed up as a contributor as I wanted to respond to an item about Ashford, Kent, my home town. In fact, not only do I live here, but I work in Ashford as the council's Marketing and Communications Manager. So that, of course, makes Ashford and its problems my fault entirely...
My job - or one of them - is to promote Ashford to potential incoming businesses and to would-be tourists. And while some may think that's a poisoned chalice, it's actually something we do rather well. With unemployment below 2% and an increasing number of visitors enjoying the countryside and pretty villages around Ashford, the town must have something going for it. Interestingly, the town has a good reputation nationally and internationally, particularly as a well-located business centre. Locals, though (the vocal ones at least), seem to want to do Ashford down all the while. Is that the same everywhere, or is it a disease that's peculiar to this town? I'd be interested in other opinons. Do the residents of Stratford-upon-Avon slag their home town off? Is my vision of punting on the Cam past the dreamy spires of Cambridge out of step with the views of people actually living in the place?
Those people who live in Ashford and claim the town has nothing to offer seem to have forgotten the biggest and newest cinema complex in the whole county, the fact that everyone (virtually) has a job, the amazing countryside within minutes of the centre, the two new nightclubs, the easy access to virtually everywhere (including France) and so on and so forth...
(That's enough ranting for now. Ed.)
