What does it all mean?

Hello, and welcome. Although this space is really a collection of ones and zeroes that are arranged in a certain order to form an intelligible message, and that message can be posted on any computer capable of interpreting the ones and zeroes correctly, so that the term "space" is really just an anthropomorphic comfort meant to make one feel that the information is in three dimensional space and not in some confusing non-existent electronic reality, welcome just the same.

You are viewing the home page for Researcher 177441. It is, I know, recommended that each researcher choose his or her own name. It seems that the designers of this website felt each researcher would be better served by being able to give him or herself a witty 'nom de plume' like Wazzup or 2Bornot2B. Researchers, evidently, function better when they are allowed to expel their creative seed in short, sporadic bits of wit.

How nice.

In opposition to this policy, the author (who, when he has his own website will assign users indelible usernames like Jeffrey and Arvid and Spanky the Wonder Llama) has chosen to keep the name he was assigned, just as in reality we aren't allowed to go leaping off to court to change our names whenever the latest caprice grabs us by the Isle of Langerhans. If this were permitted, imagine how few Jeremiahs and Humphreys there would be, and how many Booyeahs and Aces and men with Ice in their name we would run into robbing banks.

Also I rather like the name Researcher 177441.

Enough of this, or as Australians say, "Enough of this" (they speak a limited form of English down there, too). This introduction is merely meant to provide you with a glimpse into the soul of Researcher 177441. I think it was Shakespeare who first said the windows are the eyes to the soul. I firmly believe it. Any of you who don't believe it should try making direct eye contact for one week with everyone you pass on the street, talk to, or see (N.B. not recommended for researchers visiting New York City). Ask yourself what you see. The point I want to make, though, is that my eyes are inaccessible to you and consequently can tell you very little about my soul. If you would like to know something about the great mystery that is Researcher 177441, you will have to examine this page closely, sift through every journal entry, guide entry, and conversation, and then apply your mind to the problem of "Who is Researcher 177441?" Weigh every word. Deliberate upon every punctuation mark. Study every run-on sentence. I will help you out as much as I can by trying not to write too self-consciously. I don't want to be witty as much as I want to be true. I have recently acquired a motto (something I do not recommend to everyone. Do not take a motto and accept it into your life until it sits on your doorstep for weeks and weeks asking to be let in). My motto is: Never Turn Your Back On Reality. Which is not to say that omnipotence should be your goal. Merely that you should never avoid reality, and the reality you have thus far encountered should not be ignored. For more on this, see Reality in my guide entries.

So, now we turn to the rest of the page, which is yours to peruse as you wish. Isaac Asimov wrote that liking something is the best form of ownership, and owning something is the worst forming of liking. I sincerely hope that you like my page, and if you don't, you have spent little enough on it that it was worth the price.

Yours,
Researcher 177441

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
