Greetings all! Did you know that Australia is home to the world's deadliest spiders?
I am an amateur naturalist lucky enough to be living in a part of New South Wales that has a large and diverse range of animals, including four species of funnelweb spider that are potentially deadly to humans.
My hobby is the study of primitive spiders - funnelwebs, trapdoor and mouse spiders. I am building a large reference collection (currently over 450 specimens in alcohol) which is used as source material for descriptive taxonomic work. I also maintain several live animals in order to study their lifestyle and habits, as there is still much to learn in this area for most species.
Fear of the unknown makes these animals seem more frightening than they actually are. Therefore I also make use of the collection to educate individuals and give talks to small groups.
I am writing an information booklet on the primitive spiders that are local to the Southern Highlands area of New South Wales, and will make this avaialable as a Guide entry when it is complete.
If anyone has questions about primitive spiders in particular, spiders in general or anything else to do with Australian wildlife, please just ask and I will do my best to give an answer.
