The first sentence I think sets the right tone for what I want to write the way it is. While Wycliff's work is important especially for the English church it is not the beginning of Protestantism.
As far as English being an amalgam of other languages yes, I've read Chaucer and while I found it remotely understandable, even at that point in time it had added parts from Latin, French and Celtic. It was not spoken at court during the 14th century (except in private conversations) and it plainly was not sophisticated enough to convey complicated concepts like the other languages without using words from those languages. Which I guess makes it an amalgam.
