The charts at http://www.last.fm/user/happydufus/ are created from tracks I've listened to and "scrobbled".

"scrobbling" is the act of sending details of the music to which you have listened to last.fm, this can be...
a: Music played on your computer (windows/linux/mac support, source available if you want to port to another O/S)
b: Music played on your portable music player (e.g. Ipod)
c: Music from one of the Last.fm radio streams

Now a quick word about option "c", you have two option you can listen using the last.fm client software or via the web-page using flash.

For me it's a great way of discovering new music and keeping track of the music to which I listen.

If you go to the "My Radio" section of my page (link at top of this post) and click on one of the stations you should be able to see how the web-page player works without signing up.

If you go to http://www.last.fm and "find out more link" under the sign up button you will get more info.

Let me know how you get on if you decide to sign up.

"can i stream whole songs if I sign up???"
You get whole song on the "radio channels"
...as to being able to stream a specific song at will, that depend on the artist/label as a rule a little gold arrow by a track whole song - little blue arrow 30s clip

30s track ... but if you were listening to say the "French" tag radio and it came up you would get the whole track.
