I have just been inspired to write an entry on Cauls and the traditions associated with them because a friend of mine is going to sail the Antarctic...
I was wondering... how does one go about obtaining a caul....

Well - if you ask a midwife nicely - the membranes (as now habit dictates I refer to cauls) are usually incinerated - but some people do eat the placenta afterwards and I have seen midwives ask the parents what they would like to do with the membranes and placenta...
I have to be honest, I have no idea...
Do you want me to try and find out?

Yes please - the friend who is doing the sailing is John Ridgway who rowed across the atlantic in 1966. It would be great to present him with a caul as a good luck omen.

I wouldn't know how to dry it out though... not the kind of thing you want in your airing cupboard is it?

I should have an answer by next week - but after discussing the theory with my medic flatmate, Health and Safety may be a downfall - as well as informed consent from the mother...
But I'll have an answer soon

I haven't forgotten about you (indeed, who could ) - but it's taking me a little longer than anticipated to get this info...
But as soon as I get it - I'll post
Sorry about the delay

I have an answer! Unfortunately - due to consent issues and health and safety issues it may not be possible to get a caul from this country - the only way may be to get it from the third world... but as you can understand, that's a little ethically dubious...
I can't help....

I see the ducks are all in line.... and so are mine.
I've just moved house and I have bought three ducks for the new bathroom. One is a Union Jack Duckie, One is a Stars and Stripes Duckie and the other is a Devil Duckie.
How camp is that?

Awwwh!
I've seen those sitting ducks - ones with targets already painted onto them - I was tempted to buy one, but wondered whether it was worth splashing out £7 on a rubber duckie.....
