Hey LeKZ! Welcome back! I'm not sure which one of you is the computer whizz, but I need your help. I just redesigned my space, and I want to know how you get gorgeous colours in GuideML.

Too bad - I should have been creating a non-h2g2 web-space, but some things are less important generally!

Hi Fenny~

The tricky part is knowing what colour you are going to get using hexadecimal values. The code just looks like this:

Your text here

Note that 'color' is spelt without a 'u', and there have to be "" around the hex value. RGB stand for RedGreenBlue, which are the three primary colours of LIGHT - red, yellow, and blue are the three primary colours of PIGMENT.

The values range in each colour from 0-9A-F so that #000000=0% all three colours, or black - remember, this is LIGHT, not PIGMENT, so when you mix all three colours at 100% (#FFFFFF) you get white, not black.

Red+Blue in various combinations gives you purples, and pinks. The pink scrolling marquee on our page is #FF0080. The purple words are #6633FF (smiley - erm I think).

Red+Green in various combinations gives you yellows and golds. #FFFF00 is bright yellow.

Come to think of it, I think someone here did a chart of hex values for everybody. Just try entering 'hexadecimal' into the search box.

If not, we're basically self-taught, but we can usually do colours by the seat of our pants... if there are specific colours you want, we can make educated guesses and you can fiddle with the numbers. It's a little counter-intuitive at first, because we all learnt pigment in primary school.

Hope that helps. smiley - cheers

Hi Penny

Just for fun... and because I shouldn't be doing anything non-work-related...

I thought I'd add to the confusion-level: Hexadecimal values are found by translating the Red, Green, and Blue values of a colour and concatenating. So, you would look at Red 64, Green 48, and Blue 96, make that Red 40, Green 30, and Blue 60, and then translate it to .

There really was no reason, except to show off... sorry! I'm not normally a know-it-all, but I get didactic sometimes!

smiley - huh 'Concatenating'? smiley - bigeyes

I told you I was self-taught. I thought the alphanumeric values had to do with saturation... smiley - doh

Shows what the seat of MY pants knows! smiley - laugh

Don't worry Penny! I'm self-taught, too, and I got the details out of a web-mag. Concatenate is a word I learned from (roughly) a spreadsheet programme, and it means sticking several strings of numbers/letters together.

How did you teach yourself? I started with Netscape Composer and kept reading the Source Code until I understood it (not difficult) and then started trying JavaScript (that's something I'm still working on!) See my space for how much I've *tried* to learn this year! (boast boast).

Thanks for the colour help. I should have known, but I was not succeeding!
