If you haven't gone and seen Donnie Darko yet, go and see it. It's excellent, probably one of the best films I've ever seen. The way music is used in it is brilliant.
And the mate I went to see it with found a website that pretty much explains most of what is going on.

I saw it at the Cameo on Halloween night, as part of a triple bill with The Wicker Man and Night of the Living Dead. As for the music, well - one of the guys I went to see it with has already incorporated Mad World into his set for Uluru's open-mic night...
