Didn't seem right to continue the conversation in the thread about the meet, so I'll stick it here.
I did wonder if one of the films was Kids Return, as you don'rt see it about very much. Strangely enough, it is one I do happen to have on video, taped the last time it was shown telly. I'm going to re-design my front page later, and may well put my e-mail address on it ('cos I'm a glutton for abuse), and if you drop me an e-mail, I'll stick it (the tape) it in the post for you.
I would have thought you'd probably be able to get a copy of Johnny Mnemonic for about 2p in any second hand shop. They are as common as muck down this way. If you want me to pick one up and zap it to you, let me know. It's *really* not worth the bother, though. 
Dismal, is the only word to describe it.
Merry Christmas... is very difficult to find though. It's one of my mum's favourite movies, and I've never been able to replace her taped from TV copy with a sell through or even a newer taped from telly copy. I'll keep my eyes peeled though, and if it crops up on satellite in the near future, I'll tape it. It *is* definitely worth seeing as it was his first ever straight role after al his work with The Two Beats.

As I was saying to someone at the meet (possibly Jimster, but, well, y'know, alcohol) I like writing entries on stuff I know very little about. Hence Vettriano, Herrmann, and Kitano. It means I can find out things I never knew. But it does mean I have actually reseacrh stuff.
There are several ways to contact me on my space, feel free to use any of them. I'll keep my eye out for Johnny Mnemonic. It can't be that bad, can it? The idea behind it seems good...

Truth be told, it isn't that bad, but it is one of the most frustrating films I've ever seen, because it *could*, and *should* have been so much better.

The delights of having the time to watch film four. Of course, I'm at home atm and our tv is bust, so i can't even catch up on watching video's. Oh well, have to surf and listen to a ridiculous amount of reggae music...

Bah. I want to get some reggae - I especially want something by Burning Spear or Horace Andy. But I spent the last of my 'free income' for a while on books instead. Tsk, the annoyance of going from weekly to monthly pay. Still, when the student loans come in...

Hmm. If you shop around, Burning Spear's mighty mighty 'Marcus Garvey' is available for a tenner or so, now including the dub album of the same tracks. Trojan have just released a Horace Andy double which gets a corking review in Mojo, but its £17 in HMV, which i think is taking the p**s.
Next up for me the re-issue (from Trojan, who else), of Jimmy Cliff's 1969 stormer. Then 2 7's Clash by Culture and Heart of the Congoes by the Congoes. Mummy and daddy have given me an Amazon token for me birt'day, so i think I can tell where that's going.
I'm kinda tempted with 'Young Gifted and Black' I have most of the tracks elsewhere but as one stop cd it's pretty hard to beat.

Plus, I've discovered that the bizarre sounding - I've never seen it - 'Takeshi's Castle' is Kitano's work. It's like Darren Aranofsky presenting Fun House. Or Pat Sharpe directing Reservoir Dogs. Or something.

Well, Takeshi did start his career as a comedian - he must still have those urges from time to time.
As to the news, well that sucks. Maybe I should buy a copy of Battle Royale out of respect. Excellent movie...

I've also found out that the Brother DVD has a documentary featurette on Kitano, and is available in Sainsbury's for £8.99.
So I'll be getting that

I liked it. It's very stylised, and there's a couple of points where it's a little over the top. But I just think that those critics who like Kitano's films in Japan, just because their Japanese and arty, didn't like Brother because it was American and arty, that's all. It's not as good as Hana-Bi, but what is?

The documentary on the DVD was... okay. Perhaps it was because I was looking for new information, and it was telling me a lot of stuff I knew already.
BTW, unrelated, but don't bother with the film 'Nowhere to Hide'. The best bits are really all in the trailer, and it can't seem to make up it's mind what sort of film it wants to be. It starts off all 'Lock, Stock', then goes all kind of 'French Connection' half way through. A bit like Bangkok Dangerous, but nowhere near as assured.

Hmm, yes, Bangkok Dangerous, a film I keepmeaning to watch and never getting round to, just like Tears of the Black Tiger, which looks a scream...
HMV, the charalatans, insisted that I buy Sonatine, Violent Cop and Hana Bi for a tenner each on dvd...b*st*rds.
Film of the week is the totally disposable but hugely fun Taxi!, available from your local HMV for a measly £5.99, and well worth it...

I've seen that, it's ace. Although, unfortunately, those aren't really her breasts. You know what I'm talking about.
Bought the second book of Preacher yesterday, and the first Sandman book. My flatmate had been telling me how great 'Neverwhere' was, so I thought I'd give Gaiman a shot.
I still think Preacher is ace, btw
