Hi Silverfish. I live in Newbold, just along the road from Hasland. I too am going back to uni in September (Eeek, Finals - V. Scary!)
If you'd like to meet-up 'neath ye' olde Crooked Spire sometime, drop us a line and let me know.
- I still can't believe this.

Hi Clive. What course are you doing at Uni by the way?
Just a thought, how would you like to collaborate with me on an entry for the guide, about the Crooked Spire? I've thought about it for a while, but it seems appropriate to do it with someone else from the area.
Also, who did you vote for in the last election? I voted labour, but thought about voting Lib Dem.
Bye for now

I study Philosophy at The University of Hull. Cool idea about the Entry!
I actually voted Lib Dem at this election 'cos though I've had quite a strong conservative up-bringing I am not a tory voter and I dislike a lot about New Labour, I have no real political loyalty to any one party, I was proud to have Tony Benn as our MP. I may not have agreed with him about everythhing but he fought for what he believed in, that was a quality I respected. I didn't much like the idea of someone replacing that out of nowhere and dispite the European stance, of which I still have yet to be convinced, The Libs Dems have been very good councillors locally and they were campaigning to abolish Uni Fees. That won them my vote and Lo' - it worked!
Phew-! That a lot of politics first-thing in the morning!

I preferred Tony Benn, it's a pity that he stooddown. I might vote Lib Dem at the next election. I would certainly prefer them as an opposition to the tories. I would quite like a Lib Dem government, but it doesn't look likely at the moment. I think the Lib Dems talk a lot of good sense. I respect the way that they do not feel the need to knock everything that the government do, unlike the tories.
I am not happy about everything Labour do, particular Tuition Fees, although I think they have done a reasonable job so far.
Also, about the Crooked Spire entry, I might not have much time before I go back to Uni to work on it, as I'm going to have to sort out stuff to take with me, and I'm going on holiday too before I go back. Anyway, if you find out anything about the Spire tell me about it. I'll put any links about it on my personal space.

'k
I've got my dissertation to write so my free time is going to be a limited commodity too (and they say students are slackers! ) However, if I find anything I will do.

Any help would be good. Perhaps if you find any websites about it, put links on your personal space, so I can have a look, and tell me. I'll probably have more time than you though, as I'll only be in my second year next term.

I've started writing an entry on the crooked spire. Perhaps you'd like to have a look at ithttp://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A643673
Any comments, or suggestions about what I could include would be very useful. Thanks

Everything fine at the moment, thanks. How about you? The entry is one I started writing last friday, when I got bored, but I'd been doing some research towards it before then. It'll probably need quite a lot of changing before I submit it to Peer Review, but I thought you should have a look first, you being a fellow Chesterfieldian(or whatever Chesterfield residents are called).

Very good!
If anything, it could benefit from having a little bit more about where Chesterfield is (a lot of people will not know) and maybe some more history about the church would make interesting reading. You say that The Crooked spire is the name given to St mary and all saints in the town centre but fall short of developing that hook any further.
for instance you might start talking about the church etc. etc. - "but what makes this lady really special ...is her spire."
All in all a fantastic entry to submit to peer review when it's ready. I look forward to seeing you develop it. If I do think of any useful sources, I *will* get back to you.

Thanks for the comments. I suspect you are right in saying that people might have never heard of Chesterfield, so I'll include something to make that clear. Probably something about it being near the border between Derbyshire and Yorkshire, and its proximity to Sheffield, as I suspect they are more well known than Chesterfield and Derbyshire.
Also, this history of the church is something I will need to research quite a bit, as I have a bit about its history but not much. Also, i am having problems finding when it was built, with most sources being very vague. The fire in 1961 is probably something that is worth mentioning, especially as the church was used for a Christmas service a few weeks later.
I am also thinking about including some of the statistics (height, size, etc), again thinks that probably need a bit more research.
Anyway, thanks for the comments.

I'm going back home next week, if i've got time I'll pop nto the museum on the corporation street and see if they've got anything useful.

That would be useful, thanks. Any extra information would be useful. I'll post some of the links on my personal space, so you can tell what info I've already got.

I'm going home this weekend (today in fact). I'll probably go to the library and find out about the fire I was talking about, and I might drop into the Crooked Spire, to see if they have any other information. I might go to the musuem too.
I've made a few changes to the entry. I've developed the 'hook' you mentioned a bit, but I'm going to do some more research before I write much more.

I wondered onto this home page when I noticed that this person was from Chesterfield. So am I. I'm 14 and live in Bournemouth at the moment, but I was born there, and lived there until I was 5 when my family moved to Bedfordshire. How are things there? I'm a big fan of Chesterfield FC, although they're not doing too well at the moment.
Just thought I'd say hi to a couple of fellow Chesterfieldians.

Chesterfieldians!
Well this clinches it, clearly the most cool, dashing, windswept & interesting researchers spawn in Chesterfield.
I myself am not a native,( but still consider myself to qualify for all of the above! ) having moved up from darn sarrf when I was eight. I came back home yesterday from uni and home is what it is. *contended sigh*
Chesterfield FC? I am not a follower of such things - I am however informed *thanks dad, dissapearing downstairs * that they are about 5th or 6th from the bottom of their league and not quite bankrupt yet. So er..that'd be a 'not so-good' then really, wouldn't it?
Whereabouts in Chesterfield did you live? Just curious as to how far apart we are all spread out now.
Speak to you later
Clive.

Chesterfield FC's poor league position is due to a couple of chairmen's that messed up the club, unfortunately. But I will still support them right to the very end.
I lived in Hollingwood, if that means anything to you. Since I only lived there 'till I was 5 I don't know all the different areas, but that's where I was.
Is that very near to you?

When I saw this I had to reply. I take it the h2g2 entry on the Spire is yours? Very impressive.
I too am from Chesterfield - Hasland to be precise and I love our little town.
From what I recall although I don't recal where I heard it, Chesterfield natives are called Cestrefeldians. (kes-tra-feld-ee-ans)
Hope this helps.

I love the Trading Post, especially in summer when all the bikers and boy racers turn up. Fast cars and hot chicks, what better way to enjoy a pint of beer?
Do you go round town at all on the weekends? I think a guide entry relating to the possible pub crawl status of our town is gonna be my first entry. Any tips?
