h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

If you're planning to dive straight in that is great (the life of H2G2 is its researchers)- but before you start writing articles you may want to check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/GuideML-Clinic. Although as someone who designs websites I'm sure you'll pick it up very quickly.

It's an introduction to GuideML, which is a Markup Language (like HTML) we use in the Guide. It's very easy to use, and makes Guide entries look much better.

Hi, just dropped in because I read your Joy Division entry - i didn't want to comment on the peer review thread because I'm a newbie too and i'm not quite sure how it works.
i liked it, and them, whats your favourite track? or does the name give it away. i used to be in a band also and we did a pig awful cover version of transmission that i am now ashamed of!

I chose the name beccause I thought it was the most appropriate, but actually "Transmission" is not my favourite track, although it is good.

My favourite is "The Eternal", mainly becuase of its haunting piano riff. Second favourite is "Atmosphere" which really lives up to its name. I also like "Interzone" which is full of energy.

What's your favourite?

I think "Dead Souls" must be my favourite.
But I have a soft spot for "Atrocity Exhibition", because I remember one of my friends lending me a tape of Closer, and I listened to it on the bus on the way home from school and I was just knocked out when I heard that.
Do you get that, where you vividly remember sometimes exactly where you first head a particular song?

Yeah you're right - "Dead Souls" is a great track, in fact I was listening to it in the car this morning.

I do have some songs that I can remember where I was when I first heard them. I find that they're usually the ones that really strike you as being different, or say soemthing about the circumstances you happen to be going through at the time.

Anyway, I've amended the Joy Division entry now after getting some advice from the peer review group. I'm really hoping that they'll accept it as an edited entry for the guide.

Have you written any entries yet?

No, I've been tending to dip in and out of h2g2 on my lunch-break, or like now when I'm meant to be taking my "screen-break".
I keep meaning to write something at the weekends, and I do have some stuff in my head. There isn't an entry in the guide that I can find for Mark Hollis & Talk Talk, and I'd love to write something about them. I really think there later stuff was amazing, just so at odds with everything else that was going on at the time.
A bit like Joy Division in a way, that they ran against what was happening at the time, yet end up being so influential.
What stuff do you like apart from Joy Division?

I have a *very* wide taste in music, but I'm most happy in the 1970s.
This is probably because it's when I was a teenager and really started to get interested in music. I like some 60s and 80s stuff, and some new stuff as well.

Favourite artists include: The Beatles, Queen, ELO, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Gerry Rafferty, Supertramp, Depeche Mode, OMD, Pet Shop Boys and Robbie Williams (!)

In fact, I think I might write an entry about Gerry Rafferty next. Many people only know him for "Baker Street" but he has released many albums over the years and is a great song writer.

Sorry, I know nothing about Talk Talk. I'll look forward to you enlightening me about them when I read your entry

I'm very fond of Depeche Mode, they were the first band I started collecting obsessively. The early 80's were the era when I first got into music so Duran Duran were an early favourite. Then I got into more alternative stuff like The Cure, Joy Division, New Order.
Most recently my favourites have been R.E.M., Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers - pretty mainstream really.
I also like a lot of electronic stuff, Pest Shop Boys and OMD yes, and also Kraftwerk.
