Myself, I suppose
These are just a few words to introduce myself to you all. Rather, to anyone who is out there who happens to have the inclination to read the perambulations of new reasearchers who REALLY haven't got the foggiest notion of what they are on about yet.
As in the case of most life changing discoveries, I found this site by accident. It wasn't that I took a wrong turn in cyberspace, or anything of that nature, rather I was sitting here (somewhat uncomfortably I might add)typing away at my literature review on the Biology of native Australian grass seeds (hence the nickname)when I received an email.
Actually, I received notification that an email had arrived at my mailbox in the server. I never had a clue as to where this innocuous little message would take me.
The message was a reply to a cry for help that one of the university staff members had sent out. They needed a Universal Translator (which is rather ridiculous as we only inhabit a tiny speck of what is, after all, a very large universe)to translate some documents from German into English.
Someone replied. They sent out an email that was made available to all the staff at this university (I'm actually no longer a staff member, but my ex-boss keeps forgetting that. Hence the delay in getting this review in) all of whom (well several at least, I'm sure)had no concept of where this innocuous (I really shouldn't use this word twice. BUT, it is a very nice little word, isn't it?) email could lead us.
The email contained the web site of a limited earth-type translator. But there was a little box down at the bottom of the web-page with a little picture of an innocuous (that word again) little fish and the words "Click here if you want to know the origins of the Babel fish"
Like a fool, I clicked. I was transported to cyberspace to the BBC, of all places British, where now I feel compelled to explain what I am and what I am doing here.
What actually sold me on registering was the Chinese language site, and, the opportunity to learn about creative writing. I am not a creative writer. I have to sit back in Australia and write concise scientific reviews (complete with lots of references from other scientists who have written concise scientific views) which can really be quite a chore.Yet, it is a chore I must do in order to be able to do the REALLY fun things. Like experiments, for example.
Having said all that, I don't really have the time to be here. I really need to be back there in Australia doing my work. So, lacking an electronic thumb, I shall attempt to crawl back into the monitor of wherever I am in the BBC and make my way home.
All the best

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
