Norbert the Hamster: The name
Norbert was our first hamster. He lived for 2 years (normal life span for a hamster). He got cancer and we had to put him to sleeep. The vet said he'd done chemotherapy for cats and dogs, but the hamster was so small that he wasn't sure of the dosage, or even how to administer the dose.
Bernard was the second. (all our hamsters have been named after saints). He also lived for 2 years and died the same way. He was the smartest hamster and the most fun. Hamsters learn more if you handle them frequently when they're young, and give them lots of different experiences.
Hedwig was the third. She(? - it's very hard to determine the gender of hamsters) only lived 1 1/2 years - died in her cage one day.
We are waiting until after our holiday/vacation to get another one.
