I'm a South African trying to make a home on this tiny island they call Great Britain, trading the crime ridden streets of Johannesburg for the rain and the cold. It's the question I am most frequently asked - How can I give up the sun to live in England? If the weather and public transport is the worst of one's worries then it has to be pretty good here. The truth be told, I have actually been colder in Jhb than in England as there isn't central heating or double glazing in SA and winters there can be quite chilly. The expression make hay when the sun shines is a good idea, if you make the most of the sunny days then the grey wet days are bearable (just). I'm part of that thirtysomething married with children section of the population which means sleep and lazy days are a bit of a novelty.
I have now been in the country for five years and I am eagerly awaiting my naturalisation certificate. These last five years have been mostly brilliant and I'm looking forward to having loads of fun in 2004. I'm really looking forward to getting to know the researchers of this amazing guide and maybe this time round I won't be too shy to contribute. Looking forward to the ride of my life.
