life, etc.

oh, I don't know... what's there to say? I could talk about RL first, H2G2 second, ok?

RL: Life is alright lately... I'm writing from the Part Time Faculty Office at the Community College, where I've got night classes to teach in a couple of hours. The classes are going fine. I've got make-up tests to write... Uh, Daria... yeah, Daria... I'm not getting into it here (smiley - ok), but, um... I went to a concert with Daria yesterday. We saw the Santa Fe Orchestra perform Mahler and Holzt, and a Finnish dude whose name escapes me.... Let's see... been talking to Kierkegaardvark a lot, and I see PoorTomOBedlam every now and then... I'm getting excited about leaving Santa Fe in six weeks! The circles are getting wider and higher.

H2G2: Um... got an entry in the works on Special Relativity, and I'll soon do a write up of a critique of the idea of "belief," not for the Edited Guide, but for the FFFF libraries anyway. Speaking of FFFF, Twophlag Gargleblap was just moderated there for expressing something like that he thinks Christians are stupid. I'm a little peeved that I didn't have a chance to respond to the offending remark. It could have sparked a conversation about intelligence and religion, but insead it just added to the seething bitterness. I posted a mention to Peta, and I hope she doesn't hate me now. I'm not trying to be an a**, I just think it was a bad idea.. smiley - erm

Still no word from Anna about getting a batch of subedits, or an e-group invitation that I've been expecting. I'll bet she waits until there's a few people in the queue and then does them all at once. Seems fair.

Ok, I gotta go be a good teacher now and write and grade tests.

smiley - bigeyes

Change of season, change of heart

Well, it's spring and I'm spring loaded. I've been almost nearly completely insane these last few days. Today I didn't go to school or work, out of blindness, brokeness and insanity. Tomorrow will be much better. Caculus test in the morning!

Oh, I saw Daria last night (we rented "Kicking and Screaming" - not very good - and she cooked dinner - very good!), and I'm supposed to call Jerushika in a few minutes here... uh... dinner with EBorshard tomorrow, so I can't complain.

I'm having second thoughts about the Zaphodistas. Not enough to withdraw my name, but... I dunno. I've been thinking about what the Guide actually is, and I'm seeing a distinction between the Guide itself and the community that exists around it. I think the Guide depends on the community, but in a way, they are separate. The Edited Guide can be (and certainly IS) held to different standards than the Unedited part of the site. I'm beginning to support the idea that the Edited Guide (and maybe select other parts - Peer Review, the Post, etc.) be visible to the public, while the community could exist for the researchers. There we could maintain our personal pages as we will, join funny clubs, and cuss in them if we want to.

I reread "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" this morning, and it gave fresh life to my vision of the Guide, qua Guide. That's what brought me here, and that's what'll keep me here, come what may with the moderation (Hello, Moderator! Been thinking of you, can you tell? You guys sure have shaken things up around here; I'd love to know YOUR reaction. Why not email me? [email protected] I'll not tell anyone, if you prefer! I'm just really curious what you guys think of all this. smiley - bigeyes)

QUE VIVA ZAPHODA!

ok, new journal entry: guide stuff first, then RL stuff.

As you can see from the title of this entry, I've signed up with the Zaphodistas. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A520769) I'm having fun there. I've only been censored once, and that was for writing 'VIVA ZAPHODA' in bubblish. Maybe it'll reappear one of these days. I'm really thrilled about the whole 'researchers banding together getting all up in arms about defending their rights' thing. It's really exciting. I wear my Goo beret with PRIDE. (Hello Mr. Moderator! I hope you're doing well this evening!)

Meanwhile, I've started writing my personal philosophical opus here. You can find it listed below, under my entries, titled 'Existence, Process, and God' or something like that. It's very under construction now, but it IS my philosophical opus, so if you read this, go on, read it, let it change your way of thinking about Life, the Universe and Everything!

I'm now an official Sub-editor - I have a shiny badge! - but I have yet to receive my first batch of entries to edit. I think it'll be fun. I wonder what they'll send me, and when... I guess I'll learn soon about the whole picture thing, and how I can use images from the h2g2 approved image bank, whatever and wherever that is...

Ok, now for 'Real Life': This weekend should be fun - I'm supposed to see EBorshard tomorrow and Daria Sunday. Right now, PoorTomOBedlam is sitting on my couch, going over his parts for the Shakespeare festival this summer. He'll be in Richard III and Twelfth Night, as Catesby and as Sir Andrew.

Oh, what else? Teaching is going well... I'm learning Calculus and Differential Equations. If anyone can calculate the surface area of the solid formed by intersecting two perpendicular circular cylinders of radius 'a,' please let me know. I keep getting the wrong answer. Uh... working on Nairobi applications, though being a bit lazy... don't have any corrective lenses right now, so I'm living blind, basically, and it's not too bad. I might go see a movie with EBorshard tomorrow, and I won't be able to see the screen!

That's enough for now, goodbye!

back in bizness!`

Well, h2g2 is back online! That's great! smiley - wow I'm just after Spring Break here, and jumping into the new Guide with both feet. I'll talk about Guide stuff, then real life stuff...

So, I'm into the Sub-Editor scheme. Anna has sent me a Subbie exercise, which I've been thinking about/working on. I also have posted my fractions entry and alerted the Maths Institute to its existence. Hopefully soon I'll get to work on my collaboration with Inanna regarding Catholic Culture. I'll hold off a bit and see whether she wants to make a University Project out of it. Meanwhile, SF, NM, US is "pending," and Pistachios is still sitting on the recommended list.

Ok, real life... hmm... school is going well. We're learning about the integral in n-space in my Calc class, and the classes I'm teaching are moving along right on schedule! SFSecondary is still on Spring Break for another week and a half... uh... I've been seeing a lot of neat people lately: Mr. Doane staying at the house, Jed_Elson back in town, ToriZimmermann running around like a loose cannon, and EBorshard having moved to SF. No new word from Nairobi, but we'll see. I guess I'll write again soon to Prof. Kola and to the registrar, but I'm beginning to think that it won't happen until Spring '02. If that's the case, then I'll do a semester in Dallas, hanging out with the likes of Meadowlark, Rikitiki, and Daveychu! smiley - hug Worse things happen at sea, for certain!

Well, that's enough for this entry. I think I'll go home and take a nap, or something. smiley - yawn

boogers

I've been spending too much time here lately. It's been fun, though. Tomorrow, life starts up again, barring unexpected winter storms. Must get a jumpstart today.

I've been working on the fractions entry a bit. I want it to be very clear, so I'm taking my time. I haven't started on the Catholic Culture and Aesthetics entry on which I'm collaborating with Inanna. I expect I'll get to it soon.

Today I must prepare a "Course Description" and "syllabus" to hand out to each of my two classes which meet tomorrow evening.
