The restoration is going ahead as planned
The stuff that was lost into the sea, for the most part was stuff that would have needed to be replaced anyway. The plan is to begin the restoration this summer with a view to the whole project being completed by 2005 for a total cost of some £30,000,000.

At least it was destroyed by natural causes:
A few years ago, Teesside Council spent a million and a half restoring Saltburn-on-Sea's pier to its Victorian glories. Two weeks after completion, somebody drove his boat into it (for 'boat', read 'large carrier') and knocked two-thirds of it down. That was so bad in itself, but for a whole summer I was woken at 7am by the sound of a giant piledriver, as they tried to shore up the damage.

I agree with Lighthousegirl's earlier comment that the pier was beautiful as it was. I've personally always been a little horrified that it was going to be restored, as I am about Battersea Power Station. I want to be left to rot in peace so why shouldn't the nation's favourite wrecked hulks be spared too (imagine the terror if they'd restored the Queen Mum)? Restoration/decay - a loss either way.
A new collapse...
GreyDesk Posted Jan 20, 2003
This afternoon in the face of gale force winds and a massive high tide, more of the pier collapsed
The main structure of the ballroom has now gone into the sea leaving only the room structure hanging on precariously and some weird skewed angle. I guess the next time there is some bad weather even more will go. What is even more worrying was that there was a partial collapse of some elements of the far end, and until now intact, part of the pier.
All very sad

Has there been a fire on the pier? I thought I heard a few mentions of Brighton pier tonight whilst listening to Up All Night on Radio 5

Ah, it was the other pier. Jeez - Brighton piers together are almost as disaster-prone as Southend pier is on its own

Yeah it was the other pier - the more common and uncouth one
It isn't actually that badly damaged by all accounts. It will be closed for a couple of days whilst they clean up a bit.

I spent a very pleasant afternoon in the pub on that pier. Couldn't get too though - I had to drive back to London later on.
