One of my students is the head of Nuclear Medicine at the general hospital here in Seville. He once gave me some very good advice regarding colds. He said if you really take care of yourself, stay in bed, drink plenty of fluids then your cold will last for seven days. And if you just go out and live your life normally it will last for a week.

The lady on the radio said that wheely bins had cured the problem where they could be used but I dont think that they would work on your street ... so you are left being expected to get it right!

Oh right, I wasn't aware that the council had gone as far as issuing fines to people who were leaving rubbish out on the wrong days. Certainly around here if you did such a thing, the local community would take action against you without the authorities getting involved

As for wheelie bins. They are wonderful in an area where there is room to store such a thing. Which as you'd know rules out my street straight away.

One scheme they are trialing in a nearby road is large bins permanently parked in the roadway, which are then emptied every morning. This I guess could be an effective solution, provided you're not the house outside of which a bloody great big bin is parked. Now, think about the garage that's next door to me, think about the garage across the road from me, and think where the parking limits and restrictions come into force at the end of the road. Outside whose house do you think such a bin would be parked if the 'big bin' scheme is introduced into my road? That's right...

I'm not convinced that they will introduce that scheme on my road, and roads similar to mine, as to do so would take out parking spaces. I reckon that they would need four bins on my road, which would mean the permanent loss of four parking spaces. Which, as I'm sure you can guess, would be as welcome as a rat sandwich around here.

I don't think that would be the biggest problem of having a dumpster (for that is of what we speak) right outside your house LHG. No - the biggest problem would be when they come along at 3am and empty the bloody thing ::CRASH CLANG BASH TINKLE BIFF WALLOP BANG:: just like they do the dumpsters here at the complex You think car alarms are annoying?

No Gosho, it's a space issue here.

From my front door, across the pavement and onto the road is five feet. If you factor in that the window in my front room is a bay window, then it is only four feet to the raod. Now park a 'dumpster' in the road right outside my house. Noise is not going to be my top issue. Foul smells and the loss of light into my house are going to be what I'm worrying about.

I think as well as the light which would be the biggest (is it even as far as 4ft from your window to the curve?) the mess and the noise would soon get to GD too. If everyone actually got their rubbish into the bin it would be OK, but how often does that happen? And then there is the slamming of any lids coz there would have to be lids to keep the seagulls off ...

Mind you since he is often not in bed by 3am I not sure the time would be the issue!!!!

The lack of parking and taking out 4 spaces would be a real problem too - I used to have to park miles away.
