G'day Batty...
Ivan the Terribly Average Started conversation Mar 23, 2005
Hi.
As I was telling Lil a few moments ago, with reference to the troll-stopping thread, I think you're Really Quite Clever. I thought I should let you know.
I'll do some link-adding of my own when I've the time.
Ivan.

Thanks Ivan. It must be because I recently dyed my hair again.. no blonde roots..
Actually I'll be going through the list nightly and reading the links so I can myself silly, which will allow the mods to do their part.
That's why I'm asking people to take the high road and not post derogatory remarks in the thread.

I like the high road. It's purely evidence-gathering, without any spin at all. Definitely the best thing to do.
You've hit on such a simple way to handle the matter; it would never have occurred to me, but now it's up and running it's the obvious solution. Even I can see that, and I'm a natural blond.

Me too but my IQ jumped up a good 50 points when I went red..
Sorry for the delayed response. When I sent the first response I was sitting in the Atrium of the building I work in at lunchtime playing on my tablet. Needless to say after lunch when I'm at my desk they might frown upon my being on hootoo.

My postings can be erratic, too - I'm at w*rk at the moment, but it's one of the rare days when I don't have someone sitting at the desk behind me. Such a sense of freedom... I have done some actual w*rk today, but not much. It's not easy, when everyone else is already in holiday mode.
G'day Batty...
Batty_ACE Posted Mar 24, 2005
I bet. I wouldn't even attempt to log in to hootoo from my desk. Security there is very tight (obviously - they don't even let us go into the vault and roll around in the money). When I'm at lunch I take my tablet to the atrium or to a coffee shop along the catwalks. Both have free wi-fi.

Ivan the Terribly Average Posted Mar 24, 2005
No rolling around in the money? That is unfair.
I don't think I'd like rolling around in it, but I wouldn't mind just running my hands through it all, for a few moments...
I'm one of the lucky ones here - being an analyst, and in touch with organisations outside this one, I managed to make a (slightly dodgy) business case for having full internet access. Most people here only have access to .gov.au sites, the poor things.
G'day Batty...
Batty_ACE Posted Mar 24, 2005
I have full access *except* for IM and such. I just don't want to abuse that. I know I can post to boards similar to hootoo because I post to a board at the M$ site for help with programs from other users.

It's never occurred to me to think about setting up IM at w*rk - even the in-house version we have is a blasted nusance, to be honest. I do feel a bit guilty about using w*rk time for h2g2-lurking, but somehow it doesn't stop me. The fact that the boss uses his access to plan fishing trips and order new lures might have something to do with it.
I haven't noticed any new * activity in the last day or so; that's quite encouraging.

Yes it is. So is the response I received today from the mod team.
I don't think the bank minds you doing a bit of personal business (checking bank accounts, paying bills, etc) on the computers as long as it's during off time and isn't too much time.
I often get away for lunch. The atrium has free wi-fi, as does a coffee shop in the catwalk system that connects many of the buildings. I keep a tablet in my desk drawer that I take with me to check email and surf while I eat.

I really should sort out some sort of wireless thingy for this machine, one of these days, but I'm having a degree of conflict with my inner Luddite. It was a struggle, forcing myself to get this in the first place.
I'm also in offsite contact with Lil, if ever it becomes relevant...

Lil's a doll...
I can tell you this - I don't think I could handle not having my wireless network at home. I have a laptop at home and often just drag it to wherever I want to be. At work I keep my tablet to use on one of the wi-fis.

I don't really think I'd get much advantage from wireless here at home - it's a very small house, and the only practical place for sitting and typing is right here, next to the phone socket.
The advantage of the current arrangement is that I do tie up the phone line for hours on end... Ah, blissful silence. People who matter can call my mobile; everyone else can just wait.
G'day Batty...
Batty_ACE Posted Mar 26, 2005
I used to do that. I learned the secret to the blessed silence though... I no longer have a land line. Nobody gets my mobile number unless I want them to have it.
G'day Batty...
Ivan the Terribly Average Posted Mar 26, 2005
I did once think about doing away with the landline, but I've decided to keep it. In the last serious bushfires in these parts, the landline still worked but the mobile network crashed. A bit odd, but that's what happened. I'd sooner have both, so there's a backup.

Batty_ACE Posted Mar 26, 2005
hmm.. interesting..
I've just seen no point to having the land line at this point. Then again I'm online more than on the phone anyway.

Ivan the Terribly Average Posted Mar 27, 2005
Same here.
I've been considering getting broadband, but I quite like having an excuse for the phone being off the hook all the time.

Do you think * has stopped and gone away? I haven't noticed any fresh nastiness...
